Writing a treatment is an exceptional method to challenge yourself to get the complexities of your story down prior to tackling an entire script. This can avoid having presumptuously write a script that ends up having major plot holes in the story. The more work you put into your treatment, the less time you’ll occupy your time writing and rewriting.

The assignment calls for you to write a 2-page (1st page is the title page, 2nd page is the treatment page) treatment or story idea that explains the basic idea of an instructional or informative video.

**This assignment is a pre-production component item that will be presented in Project and Presentation 1 to be created into a completed video project.

This week we will be exploring more about the filmmaking process. The treatment you will create is based on your idea of an instructional video. You will also be going over shot composition and framing in order to help you build this project into a completed work. Keep your instructional idea in the realm of something physical. (I.E., how to change your oil, how to make a good steak, how to add additional RAM to your computer, etc).

Remember to keep it simple. For example, your iPad, DSLR camera, Cell phone, Laptop camera, etc. , and with the surroundings, you have at your disposal. So, try to remember that the more complex you develop your story the harder it will be to create it.

A film treatment (or simply treatment) is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards (index cards) and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play.

ABOUT TREATMENTS

A treatment is supportive to all who are developing the story; often
used when a team needs to agree upon story structure, tone, message, and potential selling points.
The intended action (what you plan to show happening on screen) should be conveyed.
In general, it describes only what is seen and heard on camera – no desires, emotions, or thoughts of characters (This does not necessarily apply in your assignment. There are many types of formats for treatments.)

Utilizing the storytelling skills and reading material taught in the class, create an explanation of a particular subject you’d like to make into an instructional video. You’ll not only be explaining what this is but as well how to do it in broken-down sections much like a 3-Act structure (no more than 2 pages-1st page is the title page, 2nd page is the treatment) that conveys the ideas established within the story (instructional idea). The story should be simple with a clear somewhat story arc. In a sense, we should be seeing a basic beginning, middle, and end.

Delete any extra pages that are blank. Make a concise complete treatment.

NO DIALOGUE (the focus is on Visual Storytelling). Show, don’t tell.
