COLLAPSE
Hello colleagues,

This week’s discussion, I believe, is critical because when an organization has a clear mission, vision, and philosophy, the organization knows its objectives to achieve. An organization’s philosophy is a narrative statement reflecting broad principles and beliefs that guide actions and decisions (Billings and Halstead, 2020, p.136). In group A we look at Home Care or Public Health Agency. What is the overall mission of a public health agency? Public health agencies’ mission is to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote health through organized efforts that impact all (DCD, 2020). For organizations to be successful, the staff should live, breathe, and practice their philosophy. The philosophy of a program should be referenced and reflected upon, not tucked away in a report (Billings & Halstead, 2020, p.136).

How to determine

So how would I determine if the curriculum I developed is aligned with the mission, vision, and philosophy of the organization? When trying to apply this to home care or public health agency, we should ask whether my beliefs and values match what we are doing for my community? If the mission is to prevent disease, prolong life, and promote health, are we doing this? Does my curriculum teach nurses to achieve those objectives? If the answer is yes, then we have a curriculum that is aligned.

Two Methods to achieve alignment

Two ways that nurse educators can achieve alignment and congruence between curriculum components are mission alignment and transparency. A curriculum focused on competency for nurses to achieve prevention of disease, the prolonging of life, and the promotion of health is critical in public health. Nurses learning skills and having specific learning outcomes (LO) to prevent disease, manage symptoms, and teaching better habits is an example of alignment with mission. According to Alfauzan and Tarchouna (2017), when LO’s are clear and align with LO based curricula, the organization optimize and achieve learning for their staff. Nurses learning about programs to help patients, avenues for patients to seek help are aligned with the overall mission of public health. The second method is through transparency, in other words, being transparent with what you are trying to achieve. Why are public health nurses there for, why are they trying to help, who are they trying to help? These simple questions should be aligned with the mission, vision, and philosophy of the organization. So patients and staff focus and know why they are there.

Mission, Vision and Philosophy

A mission statement describes the purpose for why the institution exists. The vision expresses what the institution hopes to be. The vision statement is outlook oriented (Keating, 2018, p. 84) A philosophy is “essentially a narrative statement of values or beliefs. Values are qualities that guide the facility such as honesty and integrity. The philosophy narrates the concepts of the mission, vision and values of the institution (Billings & Halstead, 2020).

In developing a curriculum for the home care and home health population, it is advised to view the healthy people 2020 website to view high priority health issues. The 2030 actions listed are to promote population health, to provide access to quality health care and services for all, and to focus on individual and social determinants of health.” The mission, vision and philosophy are all part of curriculum development.

Alignment and Congruence

“Constructive Alignment is an outcome-based approach to teaching in which the learning outcomes that students are intended to achieve, are defined before teaching takes place.” Educators can achieve alignment by making sure there is a relationship between the learning outcomes and the learning activities that are completed. The learning objectives should be met by the students for there to be alignment in the curriculum (Alfauzan & Tarchouna, 2017, p. 85). If the curriculum does not align than the outcomes will not be congruent, accreditation may be in jeopardy and regulatory criteria may not be met. Another method to ensure curriculum alignment is through Emphasis. Emphasis verifies the consistency between content and assessment. Assessment is another method that be used as well. Through assessment, effectiveness is evaluated. This could be completed through testing staff, surveys or just research on the outcomes in the population. Alignment should be considered an ongoing process that should be evaluated and adjusted if needed. (Khan, Hirani & Salim, 2015).
