Classification/Division Essay Instructions

Dear students,

We only have one more essay to complete before the end of the semester. I hope you enjoyed the story “Friends, Good Friends and Such Good Friends” by Judith Viorst. This was an example of a classification/division essay because it described different types of friendships and it how each one is different. Viorst arranged the different types of friendships she described from least intimate to most intimate. The least intimate friendship she described was a convenience friend and the most intimate friendship she described was Men Who Are Friends. Each type of friendship she described served a different purpose and was unique in it’s own right.

For your classification/division essay, I would like for you to take a page out of Judith Viorst’s playbook and write about a specific group of people. For example, you could write about different types of teachers, students, servers, doctors, boyfriends, girlfriends, auto mechanics, lawyers, nurses, airline stewards, etc. etc. Instead of arranging your classifications from least intimate to most intimate, you can arrange them from least favorite to most favorite. Make sure that you give each type a unique name that reflects their personality. Most importantly, your classifications need to be insightful, meaning that you need to explain under what circumstances it is good and not good to run into this type of person. In addition, it would also be a good idea to provide a psychological explanation as to why these types of individuals behave the way that they do. Also, please create a fictional anecdote for each type describing an instance when you ran into this type of person. Please feel free to either use a serious or funny tone in your paper.

Formatting: This essay will be worth 100 points and should be between 4-5 pages in length. Your paper will need to be double spaced and follow MLA guidelines. The last page of your document should have a works cited page listing all of the sources you used to complete your paper. This is a classification/division essay and will be primarily based on your own personal experiences running into different types of people. Please make sure that your personal information goes in the upper left hand corner of page one of your paper and is double spaced. Your header in the upper right hand corner and all subsequent pages should be your last name and page number. Please be sure to center your title on page 1. Make sure your title is original and catches the reader’s attention.

Your introductory paragraph should broadly introduce the subject you are writing about. Make sure that your paper starts off by making broad statements and then it slowly gets more and more specific. In the introduction I want to see how well you can transition slowly from sentence to sentence making your introduction specific to your topic. Your thesis statement goes at the end of your introduction and should reveal the 3 types of people you will be focusing on. For example, your thesis statement could be: When going to the mall, the three types of salespeople you are most likely to encounter are the stalker, the phantom and Mother Theresa. Each of the points in your thesis statement will be the focus of your three major body paragraphs.

Your first body paragraph should begin with a concise topic sentence. Here is an example of a strong topic sentence. Let your voice dominate the paper and make sure that you take the time to analyze why this type of salesperson, for example, stalks you when you enter the store. You must provide reasons why this individual behaves the way that they do. If you would like to incorporate actual psychological information that would support your position that would be great. In other words, I am more inclined to give a student an A if I see that they went above and beyond by using information from an actual psychologist to prove their point. Furthermore, I will also need for you to insert a specific moment (anecdote) where you encountered this type of person. It is okay for you to make the interaction more dramatic than they actually were. Also, you want to paint the moment in a very visual way so that the reader can see what is going on around them. The more descriptive your story is, the better your grade is going to be!!:-)

Your second body paragraph should begin with a concise bridging sentence. It is important for you to explain how this type of person is different from the previous one. Let your voice dominate the paper and make sure that you take the time to analyze why this type of salesperson, for example, disappears when you enter the store. You must provide reasons why this individual behaves the way that they do. If you would like to incorporate actual psychological information that would support your position that would be great. Your third body paragraph should begin with a concise bridging sentence. It is important for you to explain how this type of person is different from the previous one. Let your voice dominate the paper and make sure that you take the time to analyze why this type of salesperson, for example, provides wonderful customer service and makes you want to return to the store again. You must provide reasons why this individual behaves the way that they do. If you would like to incorporate actual psychological information that would support your position that would be great. In other words, I am more inclined to give a student an A if I see that they went above and beyond by using information from an actual psychologist to prove their point. Your conclusion should first restate your thesis in different words. Next you will need to restate your main points. Please end your conclusion with a clincher. A clincher is food for thought and it can come in the form of a thought provoking question or call to action.
