Evidence-based practice (EBP) and research are both imperative to the nursing profession. Both are influenced by each other. Evidence-based practice would be non-existent without research. Research would be ineffective without the implementation of evidence into practice. However, while both facilitate the best possible patient care and outcomes, one must have the ability to differentiate one from the other.

Research is a systematic inquiry that is scientifically designed to obtain new and high-quality evidence to address current issues related to nursing practice (Polit & Beck, 2018). The knowledge gained from this evidence is then intergraded into practice. Therefore, evidence-based practice is implemented based on research findings. Evidence-based practice can be described as “the integration of clinical expertise, patient values, and the best research evidence into the decision making process for patient care” (Bussières, et al., 2016, p. 2). It “improves healthcare quality, reliability, and patient outcomes as well as reduces variations in care and costs…” (Melnyk, Gallagher-Ford, Long, & Fineout-Overholt, 2014, p. 5).

One could identify a research project as being an evidence-based intervention project versus the creation of knowledge in a nursing research project by the question being asked. Nursing research project begins by asking a question that has not yet been answered. On the other hand, an evidence-based intervention project begins by asking a question that searches through existing evidence for an answer to solve the issue at hand. Research utilizes quantitative or qualitative methodologies to gain new knowledge. Evidence-based intervention projects utilize a systematic, problem-solving method to evaluate new clinical evidence.
