Research Project 2 – Tracking a Relationship
One of the first steps to becoming a better communicator is to recognize the patterns & tendencies in your own daily communication. For this part of the project, you will be asked to closely examine your communication with someone significant in your life & analyze it based on the concepts we have been learning about in class.

Start by choosing one significant person in your life that you communicate with on a daily (or almost daily) basis. This could be a romantic partner, family member, friend, workplace contact, etc. You will begin by tracking your face-to-face & mediated encounters with that person over the course of 7 consecutive days. Track each significant encounter using the encounter log sheet attached to this assignment. (You can save/copy the questions as many times as you need to as you track multiple encounters. Remember, your goal here is to track each FTF & mediated encounter.) You must complete at least 5 encounter logs during the tracking period. You are welcome to have more than 5 if you wish. (The blank encounter log sheet & a couple of sample completed encounter logs are attached to this assignment.)

After you have tracked your encounters with this person, ask them to sit down with you for a brief interview. You should either record the interview & take notes later or take very detailed notes during the interview so that you can quote/paraphrase the person accurately. (If you are going to record the interview, be sure to get the other person’s permission first.) Explain what this project is about & then ask them the following questions:

How did our relationship get started?
What were your first impressions (of me, or our relationship)?
What impressions have you had of me during the past week?
What were your impressions of the communication we’ve had during the past week?
What do you think was the most important thing we communicated about during the last week? Why?
What do you think was the least important thing we communicated about during the last week? Why?
What do you think are the biggest strengths & weaknesses in our communication? Why?
Is there anything you would change about our communication or our relationship?
You are also welcome to add any other questions you might have based on the communication interactions you had with this person.
After you have completed your encounter tracking & interview, you should sit down & look at your log sheets & interview notes. (Essentially, you should treat them as a dataset that you will analyze.) Are there any themes that you notice in your communication? For this portion of the paper, you will discuss the findings related to your relationship communication with this person. Your paper should have the following sections.

Title page – Should include your paper title, name, course & section number, and the date.
Introduction – Briefly introduce the relationship you examined & what you will be talking about in this part of the paper. (Your introduction should be no more than 1 page in length.)
Body – Discuss some of the themes you noticed in your communication with the other person. You can consider your nonverbal & verbal forms of communication. Your main points will depend upon what you notice as you analyze your data. Try to focus on the three or four biggest and/or most interesting/important things you notice. In this section, you should also strive to connect your analysis to the concepts we have been discussing in the course.
You must specifically, explicitly reference the course content at least 3 times throughout this part of the paper. (This does not mean just dropping in a term.) You should choose a term/concept/idea that we’ve talked about. Then quote, paraphrase, or reference it (be sure to cite appropriately & clearly). Unpack the concept (in other words, you need to explain what the referenced term/concept/idea/quote really means) and then explain how it connects to your observations about your encounters/interview. Be sure to use specific examples from your encounter logs and/or interview.
Conclusion – Briefly summarize & conclude the paper. (Your conclusion should be no more than 1 page in length.)
Reference List – Your reference list should include the APA style citation for any resource your referenced in the text of your paper (including your textbook).
Encounter Logs & Interview Notes
This paper will be around 5 pages in length (not including your title page, encounter logs/interview notes, or reference list You must also include your completed encounter logs & interview notes that you used as a part of the project. Grades will be assigned based upon how well/fully you addressed the requirements of the written assignment. Your discussions should be thoughtful and need to dem
