Compare/Contrast

TOPIC: Choose any composer from your Introduction to Listening ebook who was active before the later 1940s (must be from chapter 29 or before). Compare your chosen composer with any other artist/composer (pre- OR post-1950s) to which you enjoy listening regularly. The modern artist can be a solo artist or a band. Your paper will primarily focus on a listening analysis of a piece of music by EACH chosen composer. THE ANALYSIS SHOULD CONSUME THE MAJORITY OF YOUR PAPER. Limited biographical information will be required as well.

The following logistical information must be followed:

For the “classical” composer chosen, rely on information from our ebook.

Find various, legitimate sources to help provide the information needed for the modern

artist you choose (the artist’s website bio page might be a good place to start). Do not

trust Wikipedia as the final word for truthful information.

Minimum length: 500 words. No max. Deduction of 10 points per fifty words under

minimum.

Typed. Double-spaced.

Include your name, this class name, and paper title

In your paper, include the following 4 parts of information for BOTH composers/artists (you may write beyond this list):

BIOGRAPHY/BACKGROUND (20POINTS)

Birth date and nationality of each person

Time period in which the composer lived

General life details (or anything unique that stands out about each person).

This should NOT be the majority of your paper.

MUSIC BACKGROUND (20POINTS)

General music details

Music training (teachers, experience, and such)

Did/does the person play an instrument? If so, what?

Types of music composed

Years active as a musician/composer/artist

Any other unique details

1 of 7

g. This should NOT be the majority of your paper.

3. PIECE ANALYSIS (60POINTS) – This section should consume the majority (over 50%) of your paper. Choose one musical work by each person that is NOT part of a Listening Guide in the class ebook (though you may use a different movement of a Listening Guide work, if applicable)*. Discuss the following:

Piece title (if from a symphony or opera, be sure to include the movement or song name from the opera)

When was it composed? (for the non-classical artist, a rough guess is fine).

How do you think the composer’s life context impacted him/her while writing this

composition? Is there a story behind the work?

MOST IMPORTANT PORTION (worth the most points): For the following

details, use specific time markings to properly describe the pieces you analyze— similar to a Listening Guide in the ebook (e.g., “at 2:12 the violins use a forte dynamic while their tempo gets faster, but at 2:45 the trumpets massively decrescendo as they slow the tempo” “The drums suddenly get loud at 3:17” “At 4:13 it sounds suddenly sad”). You should have AT LEAST 5 time-markings per piece analyzed.

Tempo

Instruments

Dynamics

Emotion

Crescendo/decrescendo (if any)

Talk about anything else related to your listening to the pieces of music.

This should be the MAJORITY and MOST DETAILED portion of your paper.

LISTEN CLOSELY.
