Rhetorical Analysis

I am supposed to write a 6-8 page paper on a rhetorical analysis about nutrition. Introduce the text, why you chose it, its place in your research. This is the only section where you should talk in the first person.

II. Rhetorical Situation NOTE: BE SURE TO INCLUDE SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE TEXT (INCLUDING QUOTES) WHEN ANALYZING THE RHETORICAL SITUATION

Context

Explain the context of the article by answering the “Contextualize What You Summarize” questions on p. 161 of Inquiry. (Note: You may have to do a bit of research—at least a Google search—to answer some of these questions. Remember that you must cite the source for all information from outside sources, including the citations for information from the article you’re actually writing about).

Audience

Who is its intended audience, and how do you know? REMEMBER: An article may be about a particular group of people, but that does not necessarily mean that that group is the intended audience of the article.

What assumptions does the author make about his/her audience already knows and may not know?

What does the format and packaging of the text tell you about the intended audience? What is the documentation style? Does the author use headings? What type of language is used? What does this tell you about the discourse community associated with this text?

Purpose

What is the author’s purpose in writing this text? Is it to persuade an audience who does not agree with his/her position? Is it to “fire up” an audience who already agrees with his/her position? Is it to inform an audience who may not know much about the topic? What details tell you so? Try to be as specific as possible in your discussion of purpose—and use the information on analyzing purpose in the Purdue OWL rhetorical analysis handout.

III. Argument

What is the main argument of the text?

What important points does the author use to support his/her main argument?

How effective is the evidence used to support the argument?

IV. Rhetorical Appeals

Choose three specific examples of rhetorical appeals from the essay. Use information from Chapter 8 of Inquiry and the handouts on rhetorical appeals to analyze each example.

For each example, write a complete, detailed paragraph (including specific details, examples, and direct quotes) that explains what kind of appeal is being made (ethos, logos, or pathos), what details indicate the type of appeal, and how effective the appeal is for the author’s argument.

IV. Discussion and Conclusions

How effective was this text for you as a reader? Why?

What elements of the rhetorical situation of the text stand out, grab you, or surprise you?

What conclusions can you draw based on your analysis?
