Each student is required to write a theoretical case analysis (TCA), which will serve as the final paper in this class. The TCA is a project in which students are expected to create an imaginary client who is seeking counseling. The TCA should include background information on the client, a presenting concern and the theoretical approach a provider could use. Students are expected to synthesize course content in their work. Students will be required to present their TCA to the class at the end of the semester (see separate document for teaching presentation guidelines and rubric).

The paper must follow APA guidelines and be 7 to 9 pages in length. Students are required to have a minimum of five evidence-based sources of information. Students are required to have their paper reviewed by the writing lab prior to submitting; any paper that has not been reviewed by the writing lab will lose 10 points.

Outline

These areas should be included in your paper:

Background information: family, social, emotional and work history, education, physical health and presenting concern(s)/problem(s). Also include a brief description of your client’s support system – family, friends, neighbors – do not simply include the number but include the quality of the support they offer your client. Don’t forget to include your client’s natural strengths as well. Remember that everyone has strengths, whether or not they are aware of them. As a matter of fact, many times throughout your career working with people, it will be your job to facilitate discovery and nurturance of client strengths.
Description/explanation of what theory or theories and intervention(s) might work best with this client and why. It would be helpful to include a theory or two that you did not select and why this theory (theories) would not work with you particular client. What would your chosen intervention(s) look like in practice? Might there be possible ethical concerns when working with this client? What goals might you and this client collaboratively set? How long would you estimate the course of counseling or therapy to last? How will you determine when the counseling process is finished? How would you evaluate (outcomes) if the counseling process has been successful?
Prior to answering this question, please read the section “Finding Your Preferred Clinical Style,” which spans pages 470-474 of the text. Once you complete and evaluate the multiple-choice questionnaire, you will have a better determination of your clinical style. How does you chosen model align with your preferred clinical style? As you are making the determination of whether or not your chosen model supports your preferred clinical style, please keep in mind and discuss integrative (or eclectic) therapies, which 83% of counseling professionals subscribe to.
