Social Work Response to Discussion Questions

We have to respond in 125 words to two peers with 2 sources as peer reviewed journal articles per peer.

PEER 1: The idea of dividing families into 3 categories of consumer families, dependent families, and resistant families (Crosson-Tower, 2014) help to clearly outline the needs in regards to prevention and protection efforts. This is important to know what resources need be directed towards what families, for example outreach and follow-ups (Crosson-Tower, 2014), or even further action. This allows prevention efforts to target needs of specific families, as diversity shows us that not all families react and respond to prevention efforts in the same manners (Wulczyn et. al., 2006).

The two vignettes give insight to two situations, one where a highly competent case worker is struggling with time management, however still manages quality care, as the other depicts a worker that lacks basic skills and is sent out into a field that is highly sensitive and in need of culturally aware and skilled interviewers. In the first case, a highly competent worker and team was able to work around high stress emergencies which provided obstacles in managing other tasks, as well as complexity in the emergencies themselves. However, the case also displayed how important the cooperation and teamwork of the agency as well as the overall competency of the social worker was able to provide quality care, despite the high levels of stress dealt with throughout the day. It is easy to see the differences between the two cases, as the second case shows what could happen if a worker were to enter the field without the proper education/training, knowledge, and expectations that the first caseworker had. It also shows how an agency can enforce simple tactics such as the training, that will provide a simple fix that proved to be effective in increasing the quality of care given by new workers. The expectations aspect of the cases is also important, as the second worker did not seem to expect the high stress and culturally diverse environment that she would be working in, which immediately reduced the quality of care that she was able to provide.

PEER 2: In the text it discusses that preventative efforts should begin in schools. The text states that if children are taught what abusive parents have never learned, they will have a better chance of becoming healthy adults and concerned parents. I found this information to be very important because if preventative efforts could be implemented young then it could really bring forth major changes in the next generation of adults.

The vignette discussed on pages 354-357 discussed a “typical day” of a protective worker named Gina. In the vignette it described Gina’s jam-packed day of work. Gina originally had an idea and a plan of what her day was going to look like, but unforeseen events took place that threw Gina’s schedule off. With the help of her colleagues and her adaptation to scenarios and events that takes place during her day, Gina handles these circumstances well.

The vignette on page 380 discussed a protective worker, named Sara who was hired an agency that did not provide adequate training. The inadequate training left the worker stressed and frustrated with the situations she was in. In the text it described that the agency in which Sara worked had later instituted a two-week training period in which basic skills, knowledge, and information about forms where discussed. Results from this training improved effectiveness of new workers, workers had higher satisfaction with the job and workers stayed in their positions longer.
