Goals and Findings of the Research:
1. What is (are) the research question(s), hypothesis(es) or goal(s) ?
The goal of this study was to analyze the relationship between homelessness and mental health in a sample of young adults.
2. How was the study conducted? What was the research/sampling design?
To complete the study, the researchers used mixed-methods to examine histories and experiences of the 54 young adults that participated. It was a public, voluntary, short-term study for the participants. They were first interviewed with a structured survey to gather quantitative data, then an interview with open-ended questions.
3. What are the key variables in this study? What is (are) the independent and dependent variables?
The independent variable was young adults living in the streets or being homeless and the dependent variable was mental health problems that they suffer from.
4. What type(s) of data analysis/statistics was (were) used in the article?
To complete this study, the researchers used chi-square tests to examine the differences between each of the two groups.
5. What were the findings of this study? (summarize the findings)
After completing the study, the researchers found that nearly half of the sample said that they have been homeless in the past year and a little over a quarter were currently homeless. According to Table 1, majority of the young adults who were recently homeless also had a history of arrest. More than half had also had some prior use of psychiatric medication and outpatient therapy.

6. Is there consistency between the research problem, the variables studied, and the findings? Was the research question properly addressed and answered? (Why or why not). What are the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used?
I believe that there was consistency between the research problem and the findings. The researchers were analyzing homeless within a young adult population and the connection it had with psychiatric problems. Studying the participants personal stories gave the researchers an inside look on the factors that led to the situation and the relationship between the two.
7. What is the relevance of the research? Is this something important to study?
This study is important because you are clearly able to see the correlation between homelessness and mental health problems. There should be more support offered to those who need it and more mental health service systems that can help.
8. What were the limitations of this study? What did the author(s) state were ways to improve the research on this topic?
One limitation in this study is that the sample did not capture young adults with extremely serious psychiatric problems. The study might not reflect the experiences of young adults with private insurances. Another limitation was that the setting was primarily in an urban county so the sample was contained to a specific area.
9. What are the ethical considerations of this research?
The study might trigger some type of emotional reaction and they might be sensitive to the topic.
