(1) A short introduction (ca. 6-10 lines), in which you briefly and clearly state the question or problem you will be examining in your essay, as well as the main steps you will take to do so.
(2) A main body (7-9 pages), in which you develop your interpretations, your arguments and views. Make sure that the structure of your text is clear. You can use markers to distinguish the parts of your essay (I, II, III, or subheads). Use clearly identified arguments in support of your demonstration. Be as precise and specific as possible when formulating your ideas. Be selective in your choice of arguments and argumentative tools. Make sure that each idea is clear as such. Make sure that the connection between the various parts of your demonstration is clear as well.

(3) A short conclusion (6-10 lines). The point of a conclusion in philosophy essay isn’t so much to rehearse the arguments discussed (e.g., “In this paper, I have examined this, that and that.”) as to reflect on, or draw conclusions from, the issues and arguments discussed in the essay. This doesn’t mean that your reflections or conclusions shouldn’t include a very quick summary of your argumentative lines. The point rather is that your reflections or conclusions shouldn’t be limited to such a summary. Moreover, the short reflections you propose in your conclusion need not be final, or definitive; they can be open and inquisitive (e.g., “In light of this, it seems fair to say that… One could even add that…”; “Insofar as Locke stresses…, it may be tempting to conclude that… However, saying this would entail…”, etc., etc.).

(4) A complete list of the references you use (books, journal articles, online sources, video sources, etc.) (5) A title page that includes the course number, your name and student ID, the date, your professor’s name, the name of the college and university.

2. Citations and sources: All sources should be appropriately referenced. All quotes should be clearly identified, and complete references (including page numbers) should be given in footnotes or endnotes. Use either MLA style or Chicago style as referencing systems. For Chicago style, see for example: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html For APA style, see for example: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ For MLA style, see for example: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ If you use MLA style, make sure that you provide the page number for each reference (when pertinent).

All quotes should be properly introduced (e.g., “As Hayek puts it, …”; “Horkheimer makes the following statement:…”; “ formulates the following view…; contends that…, asserts that…, raises an objection…, replies to this argument by stating that…, etc.”). Never assume that quotes are self-explanatory. Never let an author do the explaining in your stead. In particular, longer quotes should be explained or commented on (e.g., “In this passage, Foucault means that…”; “The issue that Butler is raising in this quote is…”; or similar). In fact, your ability to properly introduce quotes and characterize the material you quote indicates how well you understand the material and how well you understand the nature of your own arguments.

The basic evaluation criteria for this assignment are the following: (1) The respect of the formal requirements listed above (see above 1. and 2.). (2) The clarity and precision of your expression. (3) The structure and quality of your arguments. (4) Your overall grasp of the ideas and topics discussed.

N.B.: Avoid colloquial English: For example, the use of the pronoun “you” isn’t appropriate for academic writing. You are addressing your reader, not me personally.
