Option D: Proposal Argument

1) Show that a problem exists.

Explain what the issue within your topic is, why it is an issue, and why anyone should care about this issue.

2) Explain your proposed solution.

Explain what your proposed solution is to the problem you’ve so thoroughly explained. Your solution should solve the problem as you have explained it.

Your solution should be based on the research that you have done; if your explanation of the problem comes from your research, then your explanation of how to solve that problem should also come from there.

Your explanation of your solution should be as detailed as possible. Give the person that you are talking to real, actionable things to do in order to change the state of representation in the medium you are discussing. Show how this solution solves the problem.

3) Offer a justification for that solution.

You must follow your proposal by giving reasons for why it is worth it to adopt your proposal. Consider the viewpoint of your audience; what do they value the most? How can you use their values to make your proposal seem reasonable and like a good move to make? Consider things like the cost of making the changes that you are suggesting, and the possible other issues that might come up in making changes. Offer ways to avoid those issues, or maybe reasons why the changes are more important than those issues. Consider why they might be resistant to your proposal: if your proposal asks them to do something, you might have to overcome everyone’s natural desire to not have to do something. If your proposal asks them to educate themselves, give them resources to lower their barrier for participation. In this section, your job is to make it as easy as possible for whoever is reading this letter to agree with you and want to go through with your proposal. (Or, alternatively, make it very, very hard for them to say no.)
