Now that you have completed the assignments on looking up information from feed composition and feed requirement tables, I want to introduce you to some simple feed formulation calculations. For this assignment, you need to:

1. calculate the crude protein (%, CP) and total digestible nutrients (%, TDN) on a dry matter (DM) basis for both corn grain and soybean meal; and

2. determine how much corn and soybean meal (% of DM fed) should be fed to a growing pig weighing between 60 and 100 kg to meet its dietary CP (% DM) needs using the Pearson’s Square method (you should express this as both “percent of the diet” and “kg of each feedstuff” in a 3000 kg diet batch mix.

Please show your calculations/steps taken to get your answers. The calculations/steps can be typed into the text entry space provided or uploaded as a PDF. Answers must be put into the text entry space. Please make it clear which answer goes with which requested calculation. You will use the information in the following tables to calculate your feed formulations.

Nutrient Requirements (DM basis) for a 60-100 kg growing pig

% of diet

kg per day

Nutrient Content of Selected Feedstuffs (as fed basis)

% DM

% CP

Corn grain

Soybean meal; dehulled and solvent extracted

Example Calculations

Nutrient content conversion from an “as fed basis” to a “DM basis”

Nutrient content/% DM (decimal form) = Nutrient content on a DM basis

Millet grain contains 90% DM, 12% CP and 66% TDN

Using the equation above millet contains: 12/0.90 = 13.3% CP on a dry matter basis

Using the equation above millet contains: 66/0.90 = 73.35 TDN on a dry matter basis

Pearson’s Square method calculations

Balancing CP in a diet to contain 11.5% using alfalfa containing 17.1% CP and corn containing 9.3.% CP.

Note: For Pearson’s Square method to work – one CP source has to be above the desired CP in the diet and the other has to be blowed the desired CP in the diet. This method works on proportions/parts basis. The part of the table outlined in red below is what is considered to be Pearson’s square.

1. Using Pearson’s square to balance one nutrient between two feeds requires that you select a feed (in this case a protein feed) with a value higher than what you want to attain in the diet and then one with a value lower than you want to attain with the diet.

2. After selecting the feeds you put on feeds nutrient value in the top left box and the other in the lower left box of the square (outlined in red below).

3. In the middle box you put the target nutrient value you want in the diet.

4. You then subtract the left values from the one in the middle in a diagonal fashion.

These calculations give you the Parts (proportion) DM of each feed in the diet. You will need to convert those values to % of DM fed so that you can multiply your total batch of feed (e.g. 2000 kg mix) to know how much of each feed to put into the mixer to meet your target nutrient level in your total batch of diet. To get the percent of each feed follow the table across to the right.

1. Divide the parts DM of each feedstuff (alfalfa, corn) fed by the total of the two together (in this case 7.8).

2. Then multiple by 100

3. This results in % of DM Fed

% CP in feed

% CP want diet to contain

Parts DM fed

Total parts DM fed

% of DM fed

divided by

then times 100

divided by

then times 100

Last step – convert % of DM fed to kg of each feedstuff in the target batch of diet. In this case let us use 2000 kg.

· Our calculations above show that the diet should be composed of 28.2% alfalfa and 71.8% corn to get a diet with 11.5% CP

o Alfalfa to feed: 0.282 x 2000 kg = 564 kg of alfalfa

o Corn to feed: 0.718 x 2000 kg = 1436 kg of corn
