TOPIC 1: When Europeans come in contact with the Americas, the history of the world is forever transformed. The merging of the Old World and the New World brought about a singularity and created a single world platform, where ideas, culture, foods, animals, disease, technologies, and people where exchanged. In essence, the world became globalized for the first time. The coming together of these two worlds is very much responsible for the modern world, as the discovery of the New World is in fact not that old and we are still living in the shadow of Columbus’ great discovery. The term historians use for this merger is known as the “Columbian Exchange”. For this topic, please breakdown the Columbian Exchange. Describe the effects of the Columbian Exchange. What was exchanged? What made the Columbian Exchange good, what made it bad? What did it produce overall? (See Ch. 3 in its entirety of the Penguin History of Latin America, as well as previous chapters. Also consult the Crash Course video on the Columbian Exchange. *May require outside sources)

TOPIC 2: Spanish America – Breakdown the Spanish presence in the Americas. What characterized the Spanish presence in the Americas? Describe the patterns of Spanish settlement in the New World, how were they? How did the Spanish structure their settlements in the Americas? What institutions did they create to establish Spanish order and law? What was the impact of the Spanish conquest upon the Indian (Native) world? How did the Spanish subjugate their new subjects? How did the Spanish integrate their Indian subjects into a Spanish socio-economic system? In addition, describe the evangelization (Christianizing) of the Indians? How did the Spanish use religion to subjugate their Indian subjects? How did Christianity impact the Indians? In conjunction with all of this, the Spanish built an economic system that was transatlantic and that was tied to their state building in the Americas and their treatment of the Indians, what was this transatlantic link? Having an understanding of these questions will help you understand the foundations of the institution of the Spanish state in the Americas and its many aspects. ( See all of Chapter 3 of the Penguin History of Latin America. Pay close attention to any word that is italicized. Also. watch any videos related to this topic)

TOPIC 3: 1776 – THE BIRTH OF THE AMERICAN REPUBLIC: The American War of Independence, more commonly known as the American Revolutionary War, would be a “shot heard around the world” one that many regions of the world would emulate. Inspired by the ideals of the Enlightenment, the American Revolutionary War would create what many consider the world’s greatest country. The United States of America exists because of this war. For this topic breakdown the American Revolutionary War. Begin by tracing its narrative: When did it start? Why did it start? Where did it start? How did it start? Who participated in it? Who led it? Who won? Who lost? How long did it last? What battles are significant? What was the outcome, the result of this conflict? What impact did this conflict have on the American colonies? In essence, tell me the story of America’s struggle for independence. (See Ch. 3 of the Patriot’s Book and watch any videos dealing with this topic)

TOPIC 4: April 19th, 1775 is known to historians as the “shot heard ’round the world”. This phrase refers to the Battle of Lexington-Concord, where American Patriots and British Redcoats engaged in battle for the first time in history. It was also the first time that a European colony defied its mother colony. A very significant moment in human history to say the least, for this topic breakdown the Battle of Lexington & Concord. How did it come to take place? How did it unfold? How did it end? Who was involved? Who won? Who lost? What does the taking place of this event lead to soon after? In essence, provide a historical survey of the Battles of Lexington and Concord. (See Chapter 3, pgs: 79-85 of the Patriot’s Book. Watch videos on this topic)

TOPIC 5: This topic has multiple subjects to choose from. Please choose one or two subjects to focus on; after you have chosen your subject(s), breakdown your chosen subject(s): What is significant? Answer the five W’s with regards to your chosen subject(s): Who? What? When? Where? Why? In essence, provide a historical narrative of your chosen subject. Subject/Topics: (1) Proclamation of 1763 (2) The Stamp Act of 1765 (3) The Boston Massacre (4) The Tea Act of 1773 and the Boston Tea Party (5) The revolutionary ideas that inspired the American Revolution (6) Common Sense and Declaration of Independence.
