Essay prompt

Think about the relationship between mothers and daughters in the African American family and community. Think about this relationship as reflected in the two primary sources, Jamaica Kincaid’s prose poem, “Girl,” and Alice Walker’s short story, “Everyday Use.” What do Black or African American mothers have in common? What commonalities and disparities resonate from these two literary selections. Has the relationship between Black mothers and daughters changed over time? If so, what is different. For example, what views in these texts have been maintained, and which views have been let go or forgotten? Explain. Write a textual analysis essay paper in which you use these 2 primary sources to discuss your answers. Do NOT use outside sources. You are analyzing these 2 texts. The texts and your opinions and ideas are all that you need.

DIRECTIONS: Write a 2-3 page paper in complete MLA format in which you discuss your analysis and ideas. Do not use first person point of view or “I.”

IPS & REMINDERS: Four conventions of writing about literature

1. Assume a literate audience; do not explain basic details or summarize the events. DO NOT RETELL THE SELECTION or SUMMARIZE IT. This is an analysis paper, which allows you to practice research writing.

2. Include the full title and names of the authors (full name) in the introductory paragraph; introduce all literary work to be discussed throughout the paper in the introduction. Thereafter, refer to the author(s) by last name only (spelled correctly).

3. In most cases, write in third person. It is permissible though usually not necessary to use the first person plural (we) to refer to the readers of the work. It is not necessary to use first person singular (I) to state an opinion-the reader of the essay knows that the opinions in it are yours. But you may use first person singular to discuss a personal event, connection, or reflection ONLY.

4. Write in present tense about literature. The books/sources exist in the present every time someone picks them up and begins reading.

Papers must be in MLA format and typed in MS Word word processing program.
Papers must be submitted/uploaded in either MS Word or PDF file type format.
