artist study or art film

PREWRITE: Options are either: A) Artist Study: conduct research on an important artist, or, B) Art/Artist Film: watch a film about art or an artist (Narrative or Documentary) Write a brief paragraph as to why you wish to research the art topic or artist. **I WILL NEED TOPIC WITH PARAGRAPH EXPLAINING WHY BY DEC. 3RD AND A ROUGH DRAFT BY DEC. 4TH** Write a research paper (4-6 pages). This is a major paper and should not be taken lightly. A) Artist Study: Conduct research on an important artist. The report should include: An introduction to the artist, their interests, and a brief description of a typical work Do NOT write a chronological biography. A statement identifying and defining/describing the artistic form within which the artist works An explanation of the manner and importance of their innovation in their field A critique and interpretation of two major works B) Art/Artist Film: Watch a film about art or an artist (Narrative or Documentary) List of options Actions ; anything not on the list must be approved by professor) Information about the film, plot, production history, etc. (whatever appropriate) a. Summary of the film should only be a few sentences in length. Discussion of the art, mediums, art movements, etc. brought up in the film. Several points about the major issues about art the film discusses or critiques As well as your own critique of the issues and how the film handled them   Your paper should include material from class, art critics, and art scholars. I expect citations and a bibliography (MLA format). As this is a major paper, I suggest writing an outline and rough draft. You may contact me for guidance in that process if you need help. You have the following options for your research project: Grading will be roughly based on: (I will teach one class on how to research & write your paper.) 20% grammar, spelling, structure, etc. The paper should be well structured with clear main points discussed in well-constructed paragraphs, an introduction that sets up the paper, and a conclusion that wraps it up nicely. This includes your name and the course title at the top as well as a title for the paper. The paper should be free of grammatical and spelling errors. 20% research, bibliography, citations. The paper should use material from the course and you should do additional research through Academic Search. Bibliography and citations should follow MLA format. 60% content. You should show that you can effectively use research and material from the course in your paper by discussing it, evaluating it, and applying it to your specific text. The best papers are the ones that effectively combine good research with good personal analysis. Any paper with a similarity score of 40% or higher will be given a zero and the student will be reported to LMC for academic dishonesty.    Some things about the Mechanics of this Paper  1) The body of your paper needs to be 4-6 pages long. That means four COMPLETE pages – so shoot for 4.5 pages so you are not deducted points for your paper not being long enough.  2) Your paper needs to follow MLA formatting. This means standard 1-inch margins, 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced, etc. I can tell if you have increased the size of text or adjusted the margins to make your paper seem longer, and you will be docked points if your paper is not the appropriate length ACCORDING TO MLA FORMATTING.  3) Sources. All your sources must be scholarly sources for college-level work. biography.com is not a scholarly source, wikipedia is not a scholarly source, theartstory.com is not a scholarly source. Check this article if you are unsure if your source is scholarly: https://www.library.illinois.edu/ugl/howdoi/scholarly/ You have access to the LMC library online AND Google Scholar. Both of those are great resources to find journal articles or books about your artists. If you are unsure if a source is scholarly after looking at the above resource, please email me for clarification.  4) Titles of paintings should be put in italics and not quotation marks. If you are writing about a non-English-speaking artist (like Monet – he is French), put the title in italics and use the FRENCH title, as that is the title of the work, and then translate it for your reader. You could say something like this: “Claude Monet worked on his masterpiece Nymphéas, or Water Lilies, from the 1890s til his death in 1926.” Notice how I not only used the French title, but I also made sure it was spelled correctly with the correct accent over the “e.” That is important!
