Ageism in Generational Groups

Assignment 4 – Academic Argument: Considering the research question, which you had explored within your Research Proposal, Annotated Bibliography, and the Numerical Assignment, look at the subject from a point of view of a researcher (which you have become throughout the process). Perhaps the aspects of the research subject differ from what you had pursued. Evaluate the research question with which you have been working and modify any aspects that might have changed with your increased level of knowledge.

Considering these changes, form a general hypothesis about the subject(s) addressed, then write an essay that presents the primary questions surrounding your hypothesis and try to explain the hypothesis to the best of your ability. You will need to write an academic argument essay that will display your familiarity with the subject and that puts forward your hypothesis in a manner consistent with inductive reasoning. What this syllabus description should mean to you in practice:

You have researched, (or are in the process of conducting further research) and have written an annotated bibliography[1] of your research materials. Now it is time to put all that work to use in writing an essay that explores your manner of understanding regarding those facts and theories that have presented themselves throughout your research.

Using the research you have done thus far, examine the hypothesis you posited within your Research Proposal. Does it still hold? Has it changed significantly? A little? Has the knowledge you have gained over the last two months impacted the way that you think about the matter in a way that is so significant that it has made the hypothesis obsolete?
This Argument Paper should explore the hypothesis in as many of the hypothesis’ aspects as can be considered within a limited number of pages. Please do not exceed the 15 page maximum. (This means you will need to practice an economy of words.)
If you have changed your stance on the subject, explore the process of that change and provide the reasoning that has led to your new stance;
This exploration should lead to a different theoretical conclusion / argument than you had originally presented. (Such change does not invalidate your work.)
If the research does not seem to be complete enough for you to be able to obviate the logical connections that lead to the hypothesis that exists in your thought and you are aware that there are parts you just can’t think of too clearly, read around in the field to fill in the blank spot(s);
Do keep in mind that you may have to do this in order for your hypothesis to make sense to your readers, though it does not mean that you should conduct an entirely new round of research on a brand new subject (in fact, do not choose another topic); no subject is actually easier than any other if you give it the attention that it deserves;
It is better to begin with a research question or problem (a set of problems) that you will then lead your readers to follow to its logical conclusion; this logic should be based within the evidence taken from your scholarly research and any primary sources on the subject that you wish to include;
The structure of your academic researched argument should allow for exploration of the subject and only at the concluding pages provide any definite hypothesis or theory; remember that just because you have an opinion / hypothesis does not mean you should force it down your readers’ gullets;
Try to structure your essay in a manner suitable for an academic audience, an audience which needs to be provided with ample evidence of fact and logical process, whether that evidence is research data from the social sciences or a hypothetical and theoretical framework from the humanities;
Assume that your audience is as well versed in the subject as you are and write for that level of knowledge: DO NOT DUMB DOWN ANYTHING;
If you are using specialized terminology, introduce and define it, whether in the text proper or within footnotes;
If you are employing a theoretical framework, outline its basics before applying it;
You can draw upon all of the research materials you have reviewed thus far, regardless of the field of study.
Simply write what you think needs to be written on the subject you had outlined in the Research Proposal, provide scholarly and other, credible, sources of information and evidence from your research, cite and format it in MLA style, and make certain that you explore your hypothesis in as high degree of detail[2] as is possible within 15 pages.
Do not shy away from what might be considered ‘digressions’; sometimes these reveal more important aspects that must be considered within the thought process.

Remember that this essay is about what your research has revealed and about how you think it impacts the subject. This means that you need to think about what it is that you are writing and write that down, along with the things that need to be discussed given the topic or issue. Anticipate drawbacks, objections, rebuttals and address those with reasoning and evidence, just as you build your hypothesis on evidence and reason.
