Instructions:
Pick one of your first three discussion board post arguments and use that to write a thesis statement and outline. Follow the instructions on the outline assignment instructions to the letter (your outline has to look exactly like that model). I also posted a PowerPoint that explains how to write the outline and make your argument Be sure to review that PowerPoint and the instructions before you begin to write your outline. These documents will help you take your argument to the next level and make sure you have everything you need for the argument itself. If you would like me to help you with your outline, let me know and we can schedule a time to go over it. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Please note that if your outline is not in the exact form on the outline instructions document, I will ask you to redo it until it is in the right form as the form is necessary to determine if you have what you need to write the essay. You cannot write the essay until I have approved your outline.

and the thesis/outline needs to be his way.

Thats the discussion board (see attached)

Hi Lisa,

I think you did a pretty good job on this first discussion board in that you take a clear position and provide some evidence in support of it. That’s good, and you do make the key difference between W and D clear. That’s also good.

That said, this is missing some key things required in the post. You need a historical context paragraph at the beginning of the body of your post in which you explain what was going on at the time before you start talking about what each person said. Think about it like this – W and D are offering responses to a problem. To understand why they are saying this, you need to explain what the problem is. This will be true anytime you write about history. In this case, the problem is the loss of civil rights at the end of Reconstruction. You have to explain that history first – reconstruction and how it ended in order to understand why Washington is saying what he is saying, and why DuBois responds the way he does. Without that, it doesn’t really make sense. Why would Washington say these things in the first place? See what I mean. Always begin the body with a paragraph on the historical context. The instructions also tell you to do this as well.

It’s not clear why you have a a paragraph on Hope here when you are arguing about Washington and DuBois.

You should say more about the words you quote. For example, when you quote W saying “cast down your bucket,” why does he use a bucket specifically? Perhaps because of the kind of agricultural labor he is advocating for? The key to this is to remember that someone else may read the same exact words and think they mean something else, so for your analysis you have to explain why the individual words you quote really mean what you say they do. Why did the author choose these specific words? You want to do this every time you quote.

Your intro and your conclusion work well.

For Writing Exercise One, please write the missing historical context paragraph and also pick one quote you used here and say more about the words in the quote. This will be good practice for the next discussion board. Upload just those two parts to Writing Exercise One in Coursework.

Here is the breakdown of your grade:

Intro – This is good and clear. .5/.5

Body – Add the historical context paragraph, remove the unnecessary paragraph on Hope as it is not part of your argument in the intro, and say more about the words you quote. Everything else looks good. 2.5/2.5

Conclusion – This works well – you explain why this matters today. .5/.5

Reply – I like the way you engage with your classmate, but you do not specifically quote or discuss something specific in the readings/videos that you your classmate did not discuss that you cite and show how it would challenge or expand their argument. This is specified in the instructions, and it is a requirement on all reply posts. 1/1.5

Grade: 4.5/5

Good work overall! Keep in mind those points about the need for a historical context paragraph, saying more about the words you quote, staying focused on the specific argument you are making, and the requirements for the reply post and you should be set. Please let me know if you have any questions, and keep up the good work!

That is what i had to fix

Hi Lisa,

You are on the right path here, but these do not fully address the issues I mentioned before.

The historical context paragraph should be more detailed about what Reconstruction was and how it ended. You should be citing sources here. You should not mention W and D in this paragraph as you do in the last sentence as you have to finish the historical context first. You do not want to have a last sentence in a paragraph that is not about the topic of the paragraph. You already established in the intro you will be talking about W and D, so you do not want to mention either of them until you start talking about W in the next paragraph. Make sense? If not, let me know.

For the analysis of the quote, you are still jumping right to the larger meaning. What you want to do is first break down the actual words in the quote. Why bucket? You might say something like this – Washington uses the image of a bucket because it is a tool used by agricultural laborers, the very sort of labor he wants people to perform. You could note that he uses the phrase “cast down” to focus on staying at the bottom for now rather than trying to reach upward. That is not what he literally means by “cast down,” but its implied by the language. These are the sort of more precise interpretations of words you want when you analyze quotes.

These are both skills that time to develop, so do not worry. You are doing fine. Just keep these points in mind for future assignments.

That is his comment on what i fixed.
