Construct a rhetorical analysis about my social media

With social media nowadays, we oftentimes construct and project to the world an image of ourselves that may or may not necessarily be true.

On Facebook, for example, Student A may only post the most flattering pictures that showcase a round the clock, hard partying lifestyle so that others will see him as the “life of the party”. On Twitter, as another example, Student B might only retweet messages that reaffirm one’s political leanings so that others will see her as informed and actively involved in local politics. Student C’s Facebook pro-Chik-fil-a and anti-gun-control statuses portray her to be the conservative Southern belle her family raised her to be.

Your first assignment is a rhetorical analysis of the identity you (intentionally or unintentionally) communicate to others. Select and analyze one of the following for your essay (and you must choose only the most recent of the following): your Facebook statuses, Facebook photo albums, Facebook profile information (interests, etc.), Instagram photos, Twitter posts, Twitter profile, blog. Or, if you don’t do social media, select and analyze pictures of your favorite place, personal pictures you have on display where you live, or a photo of the exact set of clothes you chose to wear to the first few days of work or class here at MTC this semester, etc. Imagine your intended audience for MWA1 is your ENG 101 classmates.

Keep in mind that a rhetorical analysis assesses how a communicator argues rather than what an author argues. In other words, it focuses on the rhetoric employed in the argument (the intended audience, your purpose, pathos, ethos, logos, etc.), rather than simply summing up the argument. For this paper, you’ll need to do more than simply identify your likes and dislikes; instead, you should try to address not only why you like what you like, but also what your interests and choices might say about you to others, using the rhetorical terms we’ve discussed in this unit. Not only will you need to analyze the rhetorical situation in your social media or possessions, you also need to display an awareness of the rhetorical situation at play in this assignment.

In order to support your claims, you are required to integrate relevant source material from the Everyone’s an Author: for this assignment, you’ll need to integrate the definitions of ethos (ethical appeals), logos ( logical appeals), and pathos (emotional appeals) as supporting evidence.

Note: You can find descriptions of these rhetorical appeals on pp. 421-434 of Everyone’s An Author .

Friendly reminder: this assignment requires that you integrate material from only EAA (see just above). Your argument will rely on your own understanding of these concepts, so I strongly advise that you do not look to or use other sources to help construct your argument.

Another friendly reminder: you are required to compose a rhetorical analysis, which is a genre that is very much concerned with how texts are composed, rather than a summary of a text. Please take care to study all assigned readings and class notes so that you have a strong understanding of this genre.

Fair warning: plagiarism won’t be tolerated, so make every effort to integrate and cite quotations from EAA properly, adhering to MLA 8 citation standards. Should a student commit plagiarism on this assignment, the assignment will automatically receive a failing grade, and the student will be reported to Student Developmental Services. Please take care to carefully utilize the integration strategies we’ve practiced this semester to avoid this outcome.

If you decide to visit the Academic Success Center (ASC), you might consider bringing the following: (1) a copy of the assignment sheet, (2) your essay, and (3) class notes. Please remember that MWA1 is not a collaborative assignment, so do not plagiarize or work in groups. Seek help from only ASC tutors or me.

Essay Format:

The final version of the essay, which should possess a length of at least 3 full pages, should be formatted according to MLA 8 formatting style (please see the OWL’s video on MLA general formatting standards for a helpful review). After writing 3 full pages of analysis, then add the Works Cited page (which will include the full citation for EAA) and pictures where appropriate in the body of your argument. .

When you submit your final draft, you are expected submit it to the appropriate Dropbox folder in our D2L course site. Please make certain that you’ve titled the .doc, .docx, .pdf, or .rtf file correctly (MWA1). And please make every effort to be punctual with all submissions.
