Research a hate crime that has taken place against an LGBTQ+ person in American society. Please ensure this is within the past ~30 years (1990 to present). Discuss this group’s risk of being a victim of crime, why, what pieces of society and culture affect them, laws, and etc.
Purpose: A goal of our course is to identify the conflicts and inequalities in our social structures and institutions . This week, gender and sexuality was explored. To improve understanding on gender and sexuality, we will explore real-life experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals in American society.
After completing this assignment, you should be able to evaluate the risks of being identified as LGBTQ+ in American society. This includes things like stigma, crime, and discrimination. In addition, you should be able to analyze the likelihood of an LGBTQ+ individual facing a hate crime and other forms of discrimination.. Lastly, you should be able to apply this information in your discussion on a real-life case of this. There are hundreds across the US that can be researched. This assignment also includes creating a references section and using statistics, which should allow you to create composition that is supported with legitimate information that details the experiences of an individual.
Task: Your task is to: (1) Read Chapter 5 of our text (2) Research an LGBTQ+ individual who experienced a hate crime – including, but not limited due – murder, rape, assault, etc. (This does not include sites like magazines and Wikipedia!) (3) Create an initial post of 250 words or more before Friday at 11:59 PM that discusses this event and the questions posed above – discussing your ispecific individual, their experiences, how this relates to the statistics behind the likelihood of LGBTQ+ individuals experiencing such things, and how things like culture, stigma, and the law plays a role. (4) Connect your research to the text. Use the text to support your post by including important vocab, concepts such as sexuality, gender, transgender, homophobia, and etc. (5) Include a references section using MLA or APA format and include any and all research used. Every idea borrowed and every quote must be referenced to avoid plagiarism. (6) Lastly, before Sunday at 11:59 PM, return to the board. Respond to two classmates in posts of no less than 50 words that reflects on the comments of your classmates and the individual that they studied. Why do you think this person was at risk and do statistics support it? Connect this to our text and vocab.
Criteria: Your assignment will be graded on the following criteria, 4 point for each criteria: (1) Did the initial post meet the length requirements? (2) Did the initial post accurately answer the question posed? (3) Were all posts supported by scholarly research and not sites like Wikipedia or biased ideas? (4) Was a references section added and done correctly? (5) Did the responses address the original post by exploring the individual case and connecting it to statistical info and concepts from our text?
