It is important to establish trust when conducting fieldwork as trust facilitates people to tell their stories, whereas rapport is considered a precursor to fostering trust (Glesne, 2016, p. 137). Depending on the type of research being conducted, some respondents hesitate to share personal information and address sensitive issues. Trust is then activated by establishing rapport, and respondents are more willing to answer openly and honestly. I would establish trust in the field by allowing time with interactions. Glesne (2016) states that although contact over a long time does not ensure trust development, time may prove to be a necessary condition (p. 141). Commitment is also important. It shows the people you are studying that you are dedicated to immersing oneself to better understand and see them through a different perspective. It is important to maintain trust after the field study has concluded because one never knows if they have to return for further research.

It is important to develop trust when conducting fieldwork because subjects of research will feel more at ease and cooperative when they are comfortable with whomever might be conducting the research. ‘Rapport’ refers to the “confidence of a subject in the operator… with willingness to cooperate”(Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 2013). Once rapport has led to trust, people are generally more willing to talk about personal or sensitive issues. When a subject has a relationship with the person conducting the research they will most likely be more open and honest when being asked research questions. Trust and rapport are interlinked with each other and it is trust that can facilitate people to be open and share their experiences, however rapport has been noted to be somewhat of a precursor to trust. If people have a rapport with one another they are more likely to trust each other. I would begin to establish trust by conducting an interview which hopefully let me and the research subject get to know each other. Maybe something as simple as a conversation over lunch, or a beer in a sports bar would help me and the subject get to know each other and gain one another’s trust. It is important to maintain trust after the field study has been completed. It is not possible to predict what type of relationships or potential relationships may be created as a result of this type of research. When people are sharing personal information, or potentially developing relationships with one another it is important to consider future relationships which may be predicated on trust that was built and established during a research project.

When conducting fieldwork, it is important to establish trust because this may lead your subject to reveal more personal and sensitive information. Trust is built over time through rapport, keeping promises, and acts of kindness/commitment. Rapport is built through conversations and finding common ground. It is important to engage in friendly conversation and create an inviting environment. Glense (2016) discusses how a researcher participating in commitment acts will help with establishing trust (pp. 141). It helps everyone in the community and shows that you care about them as well. I would begin to establish trust by asking the school site where I will be conducting the research if they will support me in my desire to research and gather information. I will explain the purpose of my research and how I intend to go about obtaining information and communicating with parents, students, and staff. I would send out a letter to parents and ask for their participation, this way they are choosing to engage with me, instead of feeling obligated to. I would offer as much transparency as I could so that everyone participating knew what to expect and I would also be open and available for questions. It is important to establish relationships within your fieldwork and maintain those relationships and trust even after your fieldwork has concluded. This is important because in time you may find that you will need to call on the subjects again for further research, to ask clarifying questions, or to help introduce you in to another community/group.

I: I am curious, how would you introduce your research to a school site without turning them off? In my experience, sometimes talking to front office staff at schools has not gone well, even if I am just asking for support from the administration because I am a teacher on campus. How will you approach the school and who would you approach?

S: I wonder if you could incorporate focus groups into your research to bring like minded individuals together in the researcher. I wonder if the focus group could help people feel more comfortable sharing their experiences rather than feel like they are being isolated and questioned one on one. I sometimes feel more comfortable in a focus group setting first then doing an individual interview after I get to know the researcher more.

E: One thing you could consider to enhance your work is to provide an opportunity for individuals in the community to interact with you in a casual, non-interview like setting. Maybe you could have a meet and greet so people can get to learn your research and your purposes before deciding to sign on? Sometimes, it is nice to see what the researcher is up to before actually going into participating and that might help build trust and rapport with community members.
