Federalism – Internet Content & Readings

This is the First Assignment based upon the reading and content in the Modules.

Utilizing the information you have already read and the attached File, entitled Introduction to Federalism, address the role of the Federal Government and of the States in terms of issues of the day. Specifically issues like: Abortion, gun control, Same sex Marriage, legalizing marijuana, Gender Identification (as related to laws like requiring specific bathroom usage or sports participation), voter photo identification, educational standards, school choice (school vouchers, magnet & charter schools), minimum wage, etc.

In your initial post address: should some issues be left up to individual states, which level of government should address specific issues, is there a problem with individual states having differing laws on an issue? How does the implementation of varying laws across the states conform to the principles in the constitution, specifically Federalism?

Should the President address these issues with executive orders? Does the President have the authority to mandate actions through executive orders?

Should the Courts weigh in with interpretations on these issues? Should the Court mandate these issues as Federal issues and take decision making away from the states? Should 9 unelected individuals decide matters of legislation for all 360 million people in the US or should these issues be handled by the Legislative process?

You are not required to respond to fellow students, but it is encouraged. You should attempt to post in the first couple weeks so there is time for fellow student to see your responses and for me to post responses, that I want you to respond to as well.
