Develop an argument about why you think John Lewis chose the graphic novel form to write March: Book I. What does the graphic novel genre offer us that a mostly written text would not allow? What is the effect of using images to educate readers about the plight of African Americans during the Civil Rights movement? What are the advantages or disadvantages to using the graphic novel form? You must cite specific scenes from the graphic novel in your essay as you discuss how the media of the novel–that is, the text and images–work together to shape our understanding of the past.
Please note this essay requires you to assert and support a thesis using evidence from the novel. Essays that summarize major plot points of the novel (a “book report”) or fail to explicitly state and argue a thesis will receive a substantial point reduction.
