How to Improve Your Paper:

Reproductive, Digestive, Blood vessels for the Brain, Blood, Lymphatic and Acid-Base Balance etc.
3. Illustrations:
Use the scientific internet to find illustrations for all the systems under study.
4. Abstract:
this is not required but Students may write Abstracts with
Key Words
5.Passion:
Instructor will look for Enthusiasm
in the Paper. Show your motivation for doing this research. You may
include touching personal stories, and stories involving close family and friends. The impact of diseases on the
lives of the affected persons should be clearly discussed.
6. Definition of the Disease/Condition/Disorder
: The disease you choose must be done properly. Include sub-
definitions were add genetic aspects where necessary.
7. Importance of Cure
: Diseases that have no cure or need vaccines must be pointed out.
8. Magnitude of the problem
: Good Statistics must be provided for affected populations in the World and the United
States of America to indicate how common or rare the disease is.

Forward-looking statements:
Indicate how this knowledge could help students and others by advising people to
see the Doctor when symptoms appear.

Advocacy Groups
: National Associations for various diseases like Diabetes, Lung, Blood etc. may be mentioned.

Scientific writing will improve with time, but for now please use some of the scientific vocabulary
we have learned in place of phrases like ‘peeing’ (aka voiding urine)

Typos:
Check your work before submitting to avoid e.g., ‘Valves’ becoming ‘values’; ‘Imaging’ becoming
‘imagining’
14.
Abbreviations:
Define fully with first time e.g., National Institutes of Health (NIH).
15.What made me smile
is receiving back things I had said in lecture; e.g., “the pancreas has a corn-on a cob look”,
“the urinary system is the most majestic of all systems”

BIOL-208-P Rubric for the Human Disease Research Project
Purpose:
1. To give you a chance to show scholarship in independent research.
2. Choose a disease you know about; care to know more about because someone you know has this problem,
or it is just a common problem, but you wish to know more about it.
3. Diseases are a departure from health and that is why we are all here studying normal anatomy and
physiology versus homeostatic imbalances.
4. Notice and observe was is abnormal and write enthusiastically about it.
5. Reading improves your knowledge.
6. You don’t need to copy from another’s work, but if you read and understand it, you can re-write well
about what you read.
7. Always acknowledge the source from which you read, it makes you look good and it gives credit to
another person’s work
8. Email me what your topic is so I can approve it before you start the work. Don’t change your topic
without my approval.
Topic
a) All diseases should be covered under BIOL-208 Syllabus (A&P II)
b) Do not choose
Cancer or Musculoskeletal Diseases like Arthritis
c) You must choose a topic and email it to the Instructor for approval.
d) If by Week 5 students have not chosen a topic, they should discuss possibilities with Instructor.
e) You must NOT submit a paper you did for another class for this assignment. It is self-plagiarism and
TurnItIn will discover this.
f) Do not submit a paper you paid someone to write for you. You will learn a lot by doing this short paper
yourself.
Structure: Organize your paper based on the following sections (please follow strictly)
1- Anatomy – Describe in some detail, the Organ or part of the body affected by this disease,
2- Physiology
3- Pathology
4- Diagnosis
5- Treatment (pharmacology, surgical procedures)
Submission Date:
a. This critical thinking paper will be due on
Thursday 4/16, 2020.
b. Two points will be deducted per day of lateness.
c. You must use TurnItIn on Canvas for submission or your paper will not be graded
Final Paper to be submitted
1. The final paper should be between
8 to 10 pages (excluding Figures and References)
in length.
2. All works cited should use the
American Medical Association (AMA) Citation Manual of Style
or a
style of referencing you’re familiar with. Include the Textbook Marieb as one reference.
3. Quotations and plagiarism are not allowed and will result in an automatic ZERO for assignment.
