Choose a Poet! Read several poems by a poet who published a book of poetry before 2000. You will only write about one long poem or several short poems by this author, but I want you to read more poems than the ones you decide to write about for the essay.
Pick a well-known poet like Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Maya Angelou, T.S. Eliot, E.E. Cummings, Sharon Olds, Anne Sexton, Sandra Cisneros, Charles Simic, Julia Alvarez, Pablo Neruda, Tess Gallagher, Marge Piercy, Margaret Atwood, Kim Addonizio, Dorianne Laux, or Billy Collins. If the poet is not in our book, on this list, or not historically famous, I must approve your choice. Shel Silverstein and Edgar Allen Poe are not choices for this assignment.
You can find poets on these two websites and read several of their poems here.

Read many of the poems by the author you have picked, but only pick two to three poems for close analysis. If you have chosen a long poem, you may write the entire essay on this poem. Any information about the author must be cited with an in-text citation and a “Works Cited” entry. You can weave this information into your analysis and/or include it in your first paragraph.
You need to cite the website where you found the poems. you do not have to use line numbers for the poems. You may use up to six sources, but you MUST cite these sources according to MLA format and integrate these sources into your essay. If you use sources and do not cite them, it will be considered plagiarism.
First paragraph–Give an overview of the author’s style of writing. You might note biographical information such as the time period in which the author is writing. Include only interesting information about the author and cite this information. Point out themes. Does the author write about nature, family, romance, heartbreak, passion, intellectual ideas, philosophy, religion, race, gender roles, rebellion, conformity, etc.? Does the author write in a formal manner? Are some poems easier to understand and why? Consider yourself a reviewer and you are writing a well-thought out review on Goodreads. What did you like about the author’s style? What was challenging about his or her poetry?
Paragraph #2 Analyze one of the author’s poems in detail.
Paragraph #3 Analyze a second poem by this author in detail.
Paragraph #4 Analyze a third poem by this author in detail.
Paragraph #5 Summarize your thoughts, make comparisons between these poems, and end with an overall review of the collection.
Your essay should be 1,200 to 1,600 words in length.
The Poetry Foundation and The Academy of American Poets lists many poets who can be used for this assignment. We will have a library day to pick out books.
Terms that you might consider when analyzing poetry include subject matter, line breaks, point of view, voice, imagery, form (sonnet, villanelle, sestina), rhythm, rhyme scheme, figurative language (simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, consonance, refrain), confessionalism, and the historical connections.
