Discussion Five: Formulating the Pico Question
COLLAPSE
There is a broad spectrum of specialties that nurses work in. Each specialty is known to have its difficulties; these difficulties can sometimes cause physical and mental vulnerability. In order to cope with this, it is important that nurses have coping mechanisms. It has been shown that a negative state of mind or burnout effects “health, quality of nursing care, patient outcomes, and turnover” (Luan et al., 2017, p.163). With Covid being an additional stress factor in nurses, it is more important now than ever to ensure an awareness of the benefits that self-care can provide to one’s physical and mental state. In 2001, it was found that nurses working in US hospitals had emotional exhaustion, a 2011 study showed that 37% of nurses who were burnout worked in inpatient care and 33% were hospital nurses (Reith, 2018). Nonetheless, there is still work to be done in helping nurses identify coping mechanisms to avoid burnout and further awareness that burnout is prevalent in nursing.
With this being said, my PICO question is: What coping mechanisms have shown to help registered nurses in preventing nursing burnout, in the sense of physical and mental vulnerability, due to nursing being a demanding job? Following the PICO format as stated by Gray, Grove, and Sutherland I was able to come up with my PICO question. The P for population are the nurses, I for intervention are the coping mechanisms that have helped to prevent nursing burnout, C for comparisons is the relationship of coping mechanisms used and relief of “burnout” or stress , and O for outcome is the overall effect that coping mechanisms have on the nurses physical and mental vulnerability (Gray, Grove, Sutherland, 2017).
Due to this being a PICO question where I will be comparing what previous research has said about the effects of nursing burnout and how it effects an individual, this will be a qualitative study. My research question will be: What has data indicated about nurses using coping mechanisms and its relationship to nursing attitudes, patient care, and overall satisfaction?
The methodology I plan to use is to find previous research studies conducted in the past 5 years on this subject. I will be looking at research databases and using keywords such as, nursing burnout, nursing coping mechanisms, and nursing stress. Once I find the research studies, I will read and evaluate them to be able to come up with an overall conclusion. This will allow me to compare all data and see if there is any data that conflicts with each other or if it all states purely benefits.
