Antibiotic resistance occurs when germs like bacteria and fungi develop the ability to defeat drugs that are designed to kill germs. Instead the germs continue to grow and the germs aren’t destroyed . This does not mean we are resistant to to antibiotics. It can affect people of any age , even livestock can be affected making this an urgent public health concern. Each year in the US, an estimated 2.8 million people are infected by an antimicrobial resistance to a bacteria or fungi. As a result there have been more than 35,000 deaths .

Those with a chronic illness are more at risk when antibiotics loose their effectiveness , we loose the ability to treat infections. Human activity increases the introduction of antibiotics and germs into our environment . Germs can than live and spread amongst our communities and can make people sick. This is a common medical issue in medical facilities when germs can cause infections in patients after surgeries , open wounds and compromised immune systems. It a key to keep facilities clean and proper hygiene including hand washing. Vaccines kept up to date and education to change health behaviors for people with chronic health conditions.

Animals carry germs in their gut , including antibiotic -resisting germs. This can result in humans getting sick from the meats we eat. Livestock including cattle,swine,sheep and goat are all foods that we eat . These animals can be affected by the environment .The water they drink and the soil of the land they are raised on. Resistant -germs identified in poultry and livestock are key in helping to reduce the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. It is of great importance to protect the health of the people working on farms and the animals. Cleaning procedures of the farm, transport equipment and the production facilities is very important. They must follow safety standards . Our drinking supply must be clean, fresh air and proper nutrition.

Our food supply is among the safest in the world but people can get sick from food borne infections through contact with animals and the environment they live in . When animals are slaughtered and the meat is processed for the food we then eat, germs in the animal gut can contaminate our food. Animal waste can contaminate our meats, fruits and vegetables by coming in contact with the soil and water that contain waste from other animals.

People get infections from eating meat or seafood that hasn’t been cooked properly or is raw. Touching animals without washing your hands and then touching the food you eat can then contaminate our food. Antibiotics are used to save human and the lives of animals. FDA approves the use of antibiotics in food producing animals. Use of antibiotics is recommended to treat diseases in animals and control diseases in groups of animals.

Antibiotic free doesn’t mean the animals the meat came from don’t carry antibiotic resistant bacteria. I feel that we should decrease the use of antibiotics in humans and livestock unless it is medically necessary . With being a cancer survivor it has been recommended that I eat hormone free foods . I try to do this as much as possible and eat organic foods as well that have not been injected with hormones or sprayed with pesticides . At times I feel that we are told things are safe for us but they really aren’t .
