Asian American History
Unless specifically directed, please be sure to focus on the pertinent week’s readings in preparing your essay. Your essay should be 600 words in length counting only the paragraphs you write (for example, please do not include your name, date, title, footnotes or endnotes in your word count), and include citations. You do not need to include a bibliography, as you may only utilize sources from the class syllabus. The essays should be approximately 600 words in length. They will be graded on a 5-point scale to .5 of a point, and students will be required to utilize turnitin.com. Late papers will be penalized.
Prompt #2: Migration, due Week 3 Thursday 10/22, 12pm
“Migration” is an important theme in the history of Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans. Discuss how this emerged, focusing on Amy Stillman’s essay and Dawn Mabalon’s chapter.
Paragraph 1: an introductory paragraph with a thesis.
Paragraph 2: a paragraph in which you discuss the centrality of migration to Pacific Islanders, according to Amy Stillman’s essay.
“Islanders asserted their social and cultural relationships to their environment, which in all cases was impacted by the ocean.” (Stillman, 41)
Paragraph 3: a paragraph in which you discuss the centrality of migration to the Filipinx American experience, according to Dawn Mabalon’s chapter.
“American colonial rule made it possible—and, for some, necessary—for Filipinas/os to emigrate to the United States.” (Mabalon, Chapter 1)
Paragraph 4: a paragraph in which you discuss the following distinction that Stillman draws about Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans:
“Pacific Islanders enact relationships of indigeneity to island homelands, and these relationships are always going to render them distinct from Asians who have established multi-generational communities—over multiple generations—in the United States. But Pacific Islander histories of mobility also offer possibilities of interaction with Americans of Asian ancestry across centuries of circulation and transit.” (Stillman, 44)
