3- In Chapter 2, you will read about Sexology which is the scientific study
of sexuality. The scientific study of sexuality is difficult because, for
most people, sex is a private matter. This chapter discusses the pros and
cons of the various research methods used. It also describes in detail
how the research is conducted, whether it’s using various technologies
that measure male and female sexual responsiveness, or using online
surveys that sample many, many people. In the process we will review
basic research methods. The chapter takes a look at the history of sex
research and reports the results of some landmark studies.
I’ve also posted several articles and clips that will illustrate the text
material in greater detail. The video clip, Community Research, depicts
the process of men and women entering into a research program that
uses technology to assess male and female arousal patterns. The article,
Birds do it, details the differences in male and female arousal using the
same technologies measured in the text and the film clip. A second
research article looks at the process involved in trying to scientifically
define love. A third article reports the results of an online survey of why
people have sex. A copy of the final Why Have Sex Scale (YSEX) is
also posted in the week 2 chapter folder. This week’s discussions, blogs,
or journal entries will focus on your reactions to the scientific methods
and their results. You also need to take the YSEX quiz and report on
your results. After completing this chapter and contemplating the
information in the video and articles, I’m hoping you will appreciate the
role science has played in helping us better understand one of the four
basic motivations that drives human behavior.
