This project increases students’ awareness and understanding of cases of white-collar crimes written in an academic style.

Goals:

To identify and assess reliable peer reviewed journal articles of crimes and harms of the powerful you have read in your module (state and corporate crimes).
To gain knowledge of accessing scholarly articles.
To gain experience in reading analysis of theoretical cases of white-collar crime.
Objectives:

To develop the ability to access relevant articles for research topics.
To reflect on how this awareness can help us grow in our analytic abilities.
To synthesize with a strong relationship between theory and the complexity of cases.
Genre:

This is to be written in essay format.

Role:

Your role is to act as a researcher conducting a literature review.
Audience:

You will be addressing this assignment not only to me but to other academics.

Format:

This assignment should be a 2-3 page essay (plus any references drawn on), double spaced, Time New Roman, 12 font with 1 inch margins.

Assignment:

You are to go through FAU library to access criminology or criminal justice peer reviewed journal articles available at FAU library (homepage search button) to identify 2 peer reviewed journal articles (between 2019-2020) that provide analysis of corporate crime (1 of) and state crime (1 of) (****hint you can also go directly to the journals through FAU library for full free access directly after using your FAU login such as critical criminology, contemporary justice review, Social Justice, the British journal of Criminology, the Journal of White-Collar and Corporate Crime, Journal of State Crime, etc. and search within them for the key terms ‘corporate crime’ or ‘state crime’). You must read the entire article. Do not use occupational crimes. You should not repeat the articles, rather summarize each- what is the crime, how did it happen, why did it happen, etc.,- note the theory used by the author (when stated by the author) to analyze the case and the author’s overall argument.

Two methods to use to access articles:

1) Go to FAU library homepage. You will see the OneSearch in the middle of the screen:

Type in corporate crime, click enter;

On the left you will see refine results- go down to Limit To and click peer reviewed box and then full text box. After these results come up, see Limit to again and enter for the dates From 2019 publication date to 2021 and hit enter. Your search is now refined and a list of corporate crimes will populate.

2) The alternative way

On the FAU library homepage OneSearch you will see three other tabs (library catalog, journals and databases) click on Journals. Enter the journal name (examples given above).

Example-

Type Critical Criminology or Journal of White-Collar and Corporate Crime and hit enter

You will then see Full Text Access -click on full text access and it will give you issues and articles available for 2019 and 2020.

A list of articles should populate, look over the titles to make sure it is a corporate crime (not occupational).

Select Pdf to access and it will download (you must be logged in).

NOTE- when you cite the source/article, do so fully and do not copy your URL bar at the top as it will say ebscohost and no one can access it but you. Rather, when you click on your article you will see under tools an icon – cite- click it for proper citation format.

Repeat to find state crime articles.
