Lancelet – This answer is correct because a lancelet is a chordate that has a notocord and not a backbone. This chordate is not a vertebrate. B. Lamprey – This answer is incorrect because a lamprey is a cyclostome or jawless vertebrate that does not have a backbone. However, they are classified as a vertebrate because they have rudimentary vertebrae. C. Lungfish – This answer is incorrect because a lungfish is considered a lobe-finned fish with bony vertebrae and considered a vertebrate. Lobe-finned fish are members of osteichthyans, which is a subcategory of gnathostomes that is a subcategory of vertebrates. D. Salamander – This answer is incorrect because a salamander is an amphibian considered a tetrapod, it also has bony vertebrae. Tetrapods are members of lobe-fins which are members of osteichthyans, which is a subcategory of gnathostomes that is a subcategory of vertebrates.
