Formal Essay #1–Breaking Climate Silence
This is our first formal essay. It is a very important part of your final grade in this class. So you will want to really stay on top of the schedule for this essay, and to really try your best. You will also want to Read and re-read the blog posts below that offer advice about HOW to build long papers through use of RULE OF 3, and through building big paragraphs.
Essay #1–Breaking Climate Silence–Spring 2021
For this first essay we will be investigating an important issue related to our semester together. Climate Silence. The following questions will guide you as you build your paper. You must answer all 5 of the questions.
1. What is your own attitude about talking about climate issues? How often do you do it? Who do you talk to? IF you do NOT talk to people about climate issues, why don’t you?
2. What is your own relationship to energy use, to making a difference about the environment, to materialism?
3. What is “Climate Silence”?
4. What are 3 reasons why colleges should take responsibility towards breaking Climate Silence?
5. What are some ways that colleges CAN make a difference about the Climate Crisis? (At least one of your answers to this question needs to be a discussion of creative ways that teachers can “climatize” their curriculum.)
Even the personal questions can take quotes
In order to support your points, you need to use the ideas found in our sources, movies, your research, and in any other handouts, etc. that we have access to.
You should try to include more than one quote per paragraph whenever possible, two is good! Quote length in a paper of this length should be no more than 1-2 lines. EVERY body para needs at least one quote. Even the personal questions (Q1 and 2) need to have quotes. We will be talking about why and how to do this.
The essay’s page minimum is 6 full pages. Be sure you do Rule of 3 for each question that you pick. That will help you reach the page minimum. Paragraph topic sentences should also feature KEYWORDS, which are taken from the essay assignments questions.

Below are due dates for the paper
The paper is due Monday March 1st. First Draft day is due Monday Feb 22nd.
Assignment #4—Q1 and Q2 from Essay #1
hey all, as you know, we have assigned Essay #1. To get started on it, we will be giving you home work assignments to do. Your first assignment is to do Q1 and Q2 from the essay assignment. When it comes time to turn in the essay #1, you will simply be combining together the different homework assignments that you did into one document. Here are the 2 questions:
1. What is your own attitude about talking about climate issues? How often do you do it? Who do you talk to? IF you do NOT talk to people about climate issues, why don’t you? (2-3 paragraphs)
2. What is your own relationship to energy use, to making a difference about the environment, to materialism? (3 paragraphs)
The goal is to write 5-6 paragraphs total for these 2 questions. In order to support your points, you need to use the ideas found in our sources, movies, your research, and in any other handouts, etc. that we have access to. Even though these are personal questions, you are still expected to bring in outside quotes. We talked about how and why to do this in the zoom calls this week.
