Child Poverty
• 12 percent of North Dakota’s children were poor in2 016–a total of 21,210 children–and children of color were disproportionately poor.
• 57 percent of Black, 17 percent of Hispanic
• Children age 0-17 in North Dakota were estimated to have 12,687 individuals in poverty or 13.5 percent.

Child Population:
• From 2010 to 2019, the total child population grew an average of 2.1 percent per year, reaching 180,171 children in 2019, according to the most recent population estimates (U.S. Census Bureau, Population and Housing Unit Estimates, Vintage 2019).
• 23 percent were children of color: 4 percent were Black; 6 percent were Hispanic; 1 percent were Asian; and 8 percent were American Indian/Alaskan Native.

In 2018, there were 16.1 times more White (Non-Hispanic) residents (637k people) in North Dakota than any other race or ethnicity. There were 39.6k American Indian & Alaska Native (Non-Hispanic) and 25.5k Black or African American (Non-Hispanic) residents, the second and third most common ethnic groups.

North Dakota is home to a population of 760k people, from which 97.4% are citizens. As of 2018, 3.9% of North Dakota residents were born outside of the country (29.6k people).

Education
• 79 percent of Black, 85 percent of Hispanic and59 percent of White 4th grade public schoolstudents could not read at grade level in 2015.
• 85 percent of Black, 75 percent of Hispanic and63 percent of White 8th grade public schoolstudents could not read at grade level in 2015.
• 76 percent of Black, 75 percent of Hispanic and91 percent of White students graduated highschool on time during 2014-2015

Housing and Homelessness
• 2,715 homeless children were enrolled in public schools during 2014-2015.
• 2.3 full-time jobs at minimum wage were needed for a family to afford a two-bedroom rental unit at fair market rent in 2016.
