The “Convince Me” speech asks you to persuade members of your audience who disagree with you on a topic of genuine public controversy from the list given to you through Canvas. We will have signups for this speech topic available on Canvas. Speech presentation days will 11/30, 12/2 & 12/7.

Purpose:

The purpose of this speech is to teach you to persuade, not simply to argue. You might be able to develop a perfectly logical argument that is wholly unpersuasive to an audience. Persuading audience members that disagree with you requires that you think about why they disagree with you, identify areas where these audience members can be moved, and speak to those areas in a way that highlights your shared interests. Remember that your credibility plays an important role in persuading audiences; as such, you must deal with oppositional arguments in a fair and convincing way. Good persuaders do not ignore the opposition, nor do they simply attack the opposition, they engage opposition’s arguments in an even-handed way.

Full Sentence Outline:

Good organization is imperative to a successful speech and the best way to provide organization is to outline. For this speech, you must create a full-sentence outline. This outline should include: a gripping introduction (with an attention-getter, relevance for audience, personal credibility and preview), a thesis statement, three to five main points in a clear organizational pattern (supporting the thesis), two sub-points for each main point, and an interesting conclusion that restates the thesis and reviews main points. Between each section, you should include smooth transition statements. All references should be labeled in the outline. (The guide sheet to creating an outline will be posted on Canvas). If you do not have your outline, you will not be allowed to present. You must have your printed outline to turn in before you give your speech.

Timing:

Your presentation must be between 5 and 6 minutes. You can go under 6, but not over. You may use your phone or a clock timer while you give your speech. To stay within the time frame, it is imperative that you practice—out loud —several times before you speak in class.
