Create Your Own Creation Myth Project
Once, a long time ago, before there were volcanoes and islands…
Project is due Friday, October 23rd!
Think about the creation myths we have studied. Now you will be creating your own original creation myth that gives an explanation of how our world, and someone or something in it, was created.
Please follow these directions:
You must have at least two animal characters.
The first two- three sentences should establish the setting, the basic situation and an introduction of your god(s).
There should be a clear conflict or problem and dialogue between the characters.
It must contain one recognizable example of cultural detail or references to important values, objects, animals, or practices that signal how people of a culture live, thin or worship (for example: the yin and yang in the Chinese creation myth or the corn in the Mayan myth).
Your creation myth must be 5 paragraphs in length. (Look at the breakdown on the back of this handout.)
TIPS:
After you have established your setting and you have put your character into the setting, let him/her encounter the second character.
See what kind of conflict might develop and where it might fit into the story.
Start the dialogue and let them start talking.
Ask yourself:
What does the character want?
What is getting in the way of him/her getting it?
What actions does he/she need to take?
Sentence starter examples:
When the earth was young and the seas had not parted yet…
When the sky and the mountains had not met…
