Background: Bowen’s novel concerns Lois Farquar’s coming of age in 1920 during the War of Independence (1918-1921). The novel is set in Danielstown House, an Anglo-Irish Big House in rural Cork. Lois is the niece of Sir Richard Naylor and Lady Naylor, owners of the estate, and like all Anglo-Irish they consider themselves Irish, though they are economically and politically aligned with English. The Big House, the name given to all Anglo-Irish estates, were built on confiscated native Irish land following Oliver Cromwell’s 17th century Irish campaigns. Before the war, the A-I inhabited a privileged, golden world, but now the IRA rebels are fighting to end British rule.
