Week 10 Limitations and Delimitations

The following note is about the limitations section of the study.

The textbooks, B&G (2009) G,B&G (2013) p. 598, GB&G (2017) pp, 57 & 432 and Melnyk address the topic of limitations in a study. Limitations are restrictions or problems in a study that may decrease the generalizability (external validity) of the findings.

The simplest explanation is this: Limitations are those elements over which the researcher has no control. Limitations should be openly acknowledged because they could affect the validity of conclusions and generalization (external validity) of the findings.

FYI Delimitations are those elements the researcher can control. For your study, address only limitations. Delimitations are the things that are in your control and they include nearly all of the elements of a study. They reflect your conscious decisions regarding the research question, sample, variables, design and theoretical perspective. For example, I once conducted a murine (animal study) using rats. One delimitation was: Male rats were chosen in recognition of housing considerations and to avoid the estrus cycle.

Week 10 Implications for Nursing Practice

This section should include a discussion of the importance of nursing research to professional nursing, nursing practice and society and how this study makes a contribution to one or all of these concepts.

Ideally, the Ethics Section would follow this plan:

A paragraph about ethics – human rights in general.

Open with a sentence about the importance of ethical conduct in all phases of research Mention Belmont report and three essential parts. And actions essential for conducting research ethically: (1) protecting the rights of human subjects, (2) balancing benefits and risks in a study, (3) obtaining informed consent from subjects, and (4) submitting a research proposal for institutional review. .(include citations)

Then address what you did in your study to protect human rights.

Study submitted to IRB for approval.

State how confidentiality was protected regarding data.

State how human rights are addressed in Informed Consent. Consent was prepared using (name it) for reading level and name the score.

And say… See Informed Consent letter in Appendix 1. (the final version of the Informed Consent does not contain reading level information – that was for learning purposes in WK9).
