Dicussion : The World Turned Upside Down

THIS is indeed my favorite period of History to look at; The American Revolution! I would be lying if I said I didn’t fall in love with it every single day. Though in the 21st Century it has been cast aside and deemed “not revolutionary at all,” I beg to differ and hope to engage you all in conversation this week.

1/ Cristina Sweet : In my honest opinion, the American Revolution WAS a real revolution!

It was a political revolution that separated England’s North American colonies from Great Britain. The American Revolution arose from growing tensions between residents of Great Britain’s 13 North American colonies and the colonial government, which represented the British crown. For more than a decade before the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775, tensions had been building between colonists and the British authorities. Attempts by the British government to raise revenue by taxing the colonies (notably the Stamp Act of 1765, the Townshend Acts of 1767 and the Tea Act of 1773) met with heated protest among many colonists, who resented their lack of representation in Parliament and demanded the same rights as other British subjects. Colonial resistance led to violence in 1770, when British soldiers opened fire on a mob of colonists, killing five men in what was known as the Boston Massacre. After an immense amount of events broadening the tension between the colonists and British authorities, April 18, 1775, hundreds of British troops marched from Boston to nearby Concord, Massachusetts in order to seize an arms cache. On April 19, local militiamen clashed with British soldiers in the Battles of Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts, marking the “shot heard round the world” that signified the start of the Revolutionary War.

All in all, the American Revolution was an epic political and military struggle waged between 1765 and 1783 when 13 of Britain’s North American colonies rejected its imperial rule. The protest began in opposition to taxes levied without colonial representation by the British monarchy and Parliament.

2/ Trent Smith

In my opinion, the American Revolution had to of been a real revolution because if it never happened we would still be ruled by the British government. A revolution’s purpose is to forcibly overthrow a government in order to put a new system in place, which is exactly what the colonists did. Before the American Revolution took place the colonists were at the mercy of the British government, if they didn’t like something that the government was doing it was possible for them to voice their opinion but the likelihood of anything changing was slim to none. It was safe to say that the colonists didn’t really have a say in how the government was ran before the revolution. Which is why it was so important for them to overthrow the British government and create their own government in which the people had the power. This is also where the famous quote “no taxation without representation” stems from, the British government was employing major taxes on the colonists and they had no say in the matter, therefore they realized it was crucial to have a government ran by the people.

In September of 1783, after two years in the making, the Treaty of Paris was signed. Along with a few other goals, the Treaty accomplished the main goal of the entire revolution, making the United States “free Sovereign and independent states” (Roark, 181). The colonists had finally achieved independence, they fought for what they believed in, and with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, they marked their first official win in the American Revolution.

If you were a colonist in the 1700s, not knowing the outcome of the war, would you have supported the revolution or been against it?
