First write an annotated bibliography of at least 1000 words AND then write a research paper of at least 2000 words in response to same prompt. The annotated bibliography should be done first and will help you do well on the research paper.

Jose Antonio Vargas, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Nancy Mairs, Roxane Gay, Amy Sequenzia, and Lars Eighner all reflect on their place in our society as people who are “others,” who aren’t “normal” or like the typical American. Work with a text by at least one of these authors (the ones in our syllabus as assigned readings) plus at least four outside research sources to explore the challenges facing a particular group of people who don’t necessarily fit in as typical Americans. How can not being seen as normal impact that group in terms of practical difficulties navigating life, how others treat them, and how they see and feel about themselves? What would be the most effective ways to address these difficulties? Don’t try to cover lots of different groups; pick one to focus on that ties in with one or more of the assigned readings to explore in depth. Pick from one of these groups or email the instructor to propose another: undocumented immigrants, refugees, people with disabilities, overweight or obese people, people with autism, or homeless people.

This is a multi-part assignment. You are encouraged to follow these steps. Feel free to seek help at the reading and writing center or from the instructor at any step of your writing process.

PART 1 – Prewriting

Select a text or broad topic as a starting point. It’s usually best to write about the text you found most interesting. So if you found “from The Displaced” interesting and would like to learn more about refugees, for instance, that would be a good start.
Use databases available through the ELAC library (https://researchguides.elac.edu/az.php) to begin researching your topic. The goal here is not necessarily to find the actual research you will end up using in the essay although that might occur; the first goal is to learn more about your topic.
Narrow down your topic. For instance, you might start by simply saying your topic is the refugee experience, and then narrow it down to focus on how and why the number of refugees permitted in the United States has been in decline. Narrowing down your topic will open up new avenues of research, especially if you have questions you want answers to. (Are Americans more worried about the economic impact of refugees or the potential for terrorism? Are asylum seekers from Central America legally considered refugees? Would a Biden administration reverse Trump’s refugee restrictions?)

PART 2 – Annotated Bibliography (due prior to the research paper, see due date on syllabus)

The annotated bibliography is supposed to be done before your write the research paper; thus it has its own, earlier, due date as indicated on the syllabus. At the end of this assignment packet is a sample annotated bibliography. Check it out to get a better sense of what you need to do.
Write a working thesis for your research paper. Make it clear and specific so it can function as a one to two sentence version of your argument. This is a rough draft of your thesis that can be changed as you keep working, but coming up with it now will help make sure you actually have something to argue in the research paper so you won’t just be presenting information.
Select at least one of the assigned readings to write about in your research paper, and use the databases to find at least four credible, relevant research sources to include in your essay. Cite all of these sources in MLA format as you would in a works cited page and write a paragraph-long summary for each of them IN YOUR OWN WORDS. The bibliography should include at least five sources (one or more of the assigned readings plus four or more research sources). To help you see how to do it, the last page of this prompt packet is a sample of part of an annotated bibliography including a thesis statement and a citation and summary of one research source. It’s for a different prompt, but it shows you how to set up your bibliography. Note that your bibliography will only have a single thesis statement, whatever you think you want your thesis to be for the research paper, not a separate thesis statement for each source.

PART 3 – Research Paper (due at end of semester, see due date on syllabus)

Check out the feedback your instructor provides on your annotated bibliography. You might need to refine your thesis if it is overly broad, and some of your research sources might need to be replaced if they lack credibility or relevance to your topic.
If you write your research paper by making it up as you go along, you won’t be successful, so plan it out first, starting with brainstorming and an outline. Think of the paper as an argument and each paragraph as a building block that contributes to that argument. In high school you were probably taught to have three body paragraphs, but a paper of this length will need more.
Write a rough draft of your paper, including the assigned text(s) and research you found.
Get feedback on your rough draft. Peers, tutors, and your instructor can all help you see some of the research paper’s strengths and areas for improvement.
Revise and edit the research paper.
Don’t forget the works cited page in MLA format. Go ahead and include it even though you already submitted an annotated bibliography.
please? just you need to follow the steps to do reach papper and ignore the annotated bibliography.
you need to read ” on being cripple by Nancy mairs” ( this article is on the norton reader shorter 15 th edition)
