Here is the assignment:
Often our cultural heritage is somewhat taken for granted or even camouflaged from us. In this discussion, I would like you to take an objective look at your culture and perhaps get a better understanding of how your culture has evolved to where it is. (If you’re not sure of your culture, use Cooley’s Looking Glass – how would someone from another state or country label your culture?).
For this dialogue, I’d like for you to analyze and describe your particular culture. First, label your culture (that means give it a representative name, i.e., Irish-American, Armenian, Southern, etc.). Secondly, share with us the commonalities of your (1) cultural symbols, (2) language, (3) values and norms, and (4) traditions (you only need one example of each).
Lastly, for each of these cultural features tell us how or why these perceptions came (or may have come) into being. That is, if your cultural values are Christian-conservative, analyze and explain its persistence and how this perspective serves the betterment of the culture. Use sociological terms and critical thinking to arrive at your response.
This is a critical review exercise, which implies that I am looking for awareness, understanding, and a thorough grasp of social concepts. It will be graded on your ability to express yourself supportively, critically, and in an academic fashion.
