Editorial Assignment
In your introductory social work course, you are studying and researching different social
problems. For this assignment, you are to read one editorial (not a newspaper article) from
one of the local or national newspapers that applies to any type of social problem (i.e.,
homelessness, poverty, medical care, immigration, child abuse, disabilities, etc.). The editorial should be no more than one year old. The assignment must be submitted on Canvas. One point will be subtracted from your grade for every day the paper is submitted late. The submission should include the following:
1. A scanned copy of the editorial in pdf format or a web address/link to the editorial.
2. Name of newspaper, date the editorial was published in the newspaper, Title of editorial.
3. A paper (minimum 1,000 words total, double spaced) that includes the following three items on separate pages:
• A summary in your own words regarding what the author was saying.
• A letter of support or rebuttal to the editorial that could be sent to the newspaper that expresses your individual thoughts on the editorial you are critiquing and the social problem discussed. Your letter should be succinct but thorough, well thought out and provide facts to support your argument.
• An annotated bibliography, in APA format, from a peer-reviewed journal. The source included must support your argument in response to the editorial. The article should be no older than five years since publication.
