Assignment 1: Research Paper
(GROUP 1)

o You will be assigned to an aim of education (see below) and you are expected to work towards becoming an “Expert” on that topic.
o Go back over the readings in Weeks 1 through 3 and read the full texts on your topic, and begin to connect this to your own knowledge and experiences.
o Draw up notes on your thoughts, and express ideas on what the strengths and weaknesses of these aims and philosophies might be.

“Job training/Economic Aims” Group 1

The Research Paper should have the following:
• An introduction with a thesis statement,
• Middle (body) paragraphs with subtopics,
• A conclusion, and
• A bibliography with a minimum of five academic references.
o These will likely be journal articles or books—no blogs, Wikipedia, Google searches or non-credible websites.
o At least two references must be from your own research outside the course, not from the course’s readings.
• It should be at least eight double-spaced pages in length in 12pt font, not counting the title page and bibliography.

You should begin by explaining your particular aim and philosophy, and give your ideas about it. Discuss its strengths and weaknesses, and explore how it might be more or less effective compared to different aims/philosophies and under various social and environmental pressures. Be critical and explore different sides of the issues. Use the word “I” as you put forth your views, your opinions, your arguments and link them to any personal experiences if relevant.

The Research Paper will be evaluated upon the following:
• How your own ideas have developed
• How you contrast them to other opinions,
• The quality of your ideas, and
• How much effort you have put into working with these ideas.
