Effect Paper
Purpose: Cause and/or effect papers are one of the most common types of writing assignments, and for a good reason. Writers use an explanation of the causes and/or effects of a particular topic all of the time. Writers use cause and effect to inform, to argue, and to persuade. You need this tool in your kit.

Prompt: The selections from “Are We in a Race Against the Machine?” in They Say/ I Say offer differing perspectives on a variety of technologies. Some look at the increasing role of different technologies (like automation or search engines) in our lives as beneficial while others look at them as having an obvious negative impact. Each of the authors examines the effects, or potential effects, of these technologies and uses that examination as support for some overall claim. For instance, Kelly examines the effects of the industrial revolution along with the current trend of automation to argue that automation is going to be a boon for society rather than something to fear.

For this paper, I would like you to choose a relatively new technology that is currently dominant in our society and research the effects it has on a specific aspect of our lives to ultimately make some kind of claim regarding that technology. You may choose to engage arguments from the textbook and build upon them with the most contemporary research, or you may choose your own unique direction.

Sample Thesis: Social media like Instagram and Snapchat have the tendency to damage many romantic relationships since these apps have been proven to produce unrealistic relationship goals, foster jealousy, and facilitate infidelity.
