Part One (2 – 3 pages†): Adaptation.
Select a text (a source text) from the class readings OR find a text with a language-related topic on your own. I will attach the readings from class and you can pick one from those.
In preparation for this assignment (do not submit this part) determine the author’s audience, genre, argument, and objective. And take note for self-reference:
What assumptions does the author make about their audience? How does the genre/mode/form address a specific audience? [Outcome 1 (Links to an external site.)]
Nothing is in a vacuum. What examples, references, or allusions does the author use? To what end? How does the author “join” conversations? [Outcome 2 (Links to an external site.)]
Where is the argument? In a thesis? In a story? An image? In the struggle with words? How are the claim(s) of the text structured? [Outcome 3 (Links to an external site.)]
1. Chose a new audience to communicate to.
Chose a genre/medium and objective (the desired effect on the audience) that will suit your chosen audience. Your genre needs to be “visual”, or draw on our human sense to convey its argument—this genre could have language that appeals to the senses (like the description in a story or poem), or could simply be a visual genre itself (like a comic or a diagram). Instead of “vision” based, your genre could instead be sound/touch/smell/ haptic/taste-based. Get creative.
2. Write/create a new text (text meaning any created object) that communicates the same argument/purpose to the new audience and for the new objective (2 – 3 pages†).
3. Keep in mind, I am expecting that this adaptation be created in your voice or with your style (do not try to write/create something as if it were made by the source text’s author/creator).
4. Your adaptation does NOT need to include all the arguments and positions from the source text. It can also contain some additional arguments that are not explicitly contained within the source text.
5. Your adaptation needs to have a “visual” (sensory) focus to it. Contemplate how sensation & feelings interact with thoughts & ideas.

Part Two (600-1000 words): Accompanying Letter. SUBMIT PDF or DOCX
Write a letter (or formal email) to a publisher or organization that could publish or publicize your adaptation.
Create an argument to justify why your created text effectively reaches your audience.
Use these questions again but to analyze your own text (what you just created in Part One above).

Feedback Guideline—
1. Adaptation (Part 1) represents a thoughtful and genuine adaptation of another text for a new audience. Has a visual/sensory component to it.
2. Accompanying Letter (Part 2) explains the who, where, and when of the new audience. (Give me the context.)
3. Accompanying Letter (Part 2) explains why the adaptation can successfully reach the new audience.
4. Accompanying Letter (Part 2) represents a thorough examination of one’s own adaptation and considers how sensation/feelings can interact with thought/ideas.
