Audience Facing Draft
The early part of the drafting process is intended to be author-centric; it provides a space for you (the rhetor/author) to explore ideas, evidence and language. Eventually the rhetor needs to make their draft ready for an audience if they want to address their exigence and purpose. This means that you (the rhetor in this situation) will think about the needs of your reader (the audience) as you revise your Idea-Generating Draft into a text that is meant to be read by somebody else.
Before you start, please re-read the project overview to focus your revision and to make sure you are responding to the prompt. Specifically, are you using the rhetorical situation model to analyze your chosen text? In other words, are you identifying the exigence, purpose, context, audience, and constraints that the author had to take into account as they developed their piece?
An Audience Facing Draft is intended to be seen by a reader. That means it needs to have the characteristics of a narrative – structurally speaking, an opening, a middle and an end – and be written with the intention of communicating your ideas clearly, with details and examples to help your audience understand what you mean. Effective paragraphing is a must – make sure to review the Lecturers Talking About Paragraphs video as part of your revision. Ultimately, I am asking you to give me a narrative of your thinking. I am not so much concerned with “formal” language as I am with thoroughness and a structure that makes sense logically.
In particular, make sure to consider the following:
Does your draft articulate YOUR ideas, beyond repeating what was covered in class or presented by the readings? Remember, the goal is to articualte YOUR how you come to terms with Warren’s text and the ideas he presents.
To do so effectively, you must bring in passages (quotes) from Warren.
Do you define and explain the key terms and concepts that a reader needs to know in order to understand your argument? Please note that you are not writing about Harris so you do not need to explain his method or terms. In fact, you don’t even need to mention him. However, it is imperative that you define key concepts that you pick up from Warren.
Are each of your paragraphs unified around one idea and organized?
Does the narrative sequencing of your draft make sense? In other words, do you use transitions to help your audience understand the connections between the ideas you discuss and the logic behind the order in which you chose to present your ideas?
Is your language clear and direct?
