This week, we are writing a Personal Essay; a narrative account of a personal experience where you tell the audience what happened and how you thought or felt.
The reason these types of assignments are given so often is that anyone can write about their own experience and it doesn’t require any outside resources or research. However, even though anyone can tell a story about their life, that does not mean anyone can write a good essay about that experience.
Writing an essay about a personal experience or relationship can be a powerful way of both discovering the meaning of your own past and sharing that past with others. When you write about something in your past, you have two perspectives: your perspective in the present and the perspective you had at the time the event occurred. The space between these perspectives is usually where you will find significance in that event or relationship.
This assignment requires:
Telling a vivid a story from your past.
Explaining the significance of that story.
Finding the difference between your past perspective and present perspective of the event.
3-4 pages
Times New Roman, 12 pt font, double spaced, 1-inch margins
Proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation
Talk about any event you’d like (think: births of children, lost loves, traumatic events, stories of siblings or parents, etc.) This is your time to tell YOUR story.
