Essay on the word Anixety

For this essay, you will choose either a word that describes a part of your personality that would surprise your friends or family, or a word that best describes an event that had a great impact on your life. After you have chosen that word, you will then write an essay informing your reader how to understand this word. In other words, you may be starting from a personal place in choosing the word, but the essay should be more about this word than it is about tying it to yourself. The purpose of this essay is to help your readers understand a word from your perspective.

First, write an introduction that does not define the word yet, but introduces it conceptually and communicates its importance. Do not forget the three parts of an introduction: The Lead-in, the “they say,” and the “I say” thesis.

Then, in the next paragraph, [which is the first body paragraph], write a definition paragraph with this word. You will also be including the formal definition from the Oxford English Dictionary [The online version can be accessed through the Library Databases]. As a result, your topic sentence either communicates the importance of recognizing and understanding the dictionary’s definition of the word, or it should encapsulate how you define the word in your own words in such a way as to then integrate the dictionary’s definition. Then after quoting that definition, you will then paraphrase it to show your readers your understanding of what the dictionary is presenting. (If you have a response to that definition, ie. you don’t think it is complete, then you can include an “I say” section to respond to it after first rephrasing it on its own terms.) The templates that could be used in paraphrasing include: In other words, Which means,

Next, write an example paragraph that gives three examples that demonstrate what this word means in action. These do not have to be personal examples, but if you do choose to use personal examples, make sure that you are not repeating yourself in the following anecdote section. Also, make sure that after each example you write a sentence or two to explain that example. In regard to the topic sentence, a successful topic sentence for this paragraph will be able to tie all three examples together in some way.

Lastly, you will write 2-3 narrative paragraphs to help your readers understand this word through a story, also known as an anecdote. This anecdote needs to detail one specific time or event where this word can be best understood, and, since it is a narrative, it should make good use of a sequence of events, dialogue, etc.

Grading:

Essay 1 is split into three stages: The Working Draft, The Revision Stage, and the Final Draft.

The Working Draft will be graded as a formative assignment; therefore, the grade is based on the successful completion of the draft according to the directions of the assignment. Points will be deducted if any of the components is missing. The Working Draft will be submitted through this assignment page.

Feedback: Comments will be given regarding the argumentation of the essay, the effectiveness of the thesis and topic sentences, the paraphrasing of the dictionary definition, the explanation of the examples, and the detail included in the anecdote paragraphs. This feedback should be used in revising the essay for the Revision Draft, but will affect the grade of the Final Draft if not addressed.

The Revision Draft will also be graded as formative assignment. I will not be evaluating how well the Feedback from the Working Draft was addressed, but I do recommend submitting a revised copy because it will make proofreading for the Final Draft easier. The Feedback for this stage will only be looking at sentence flow and grammar. I will note that if the Working Draft was in any way incomplete, then the missing components need to be included in this draft or else it will affect the grade of this draft as well.

Feedback: As I said, I will only be looking at sentence flow and grammar. Keep in mind that if the same mistakes are occurring in the draft, I will not note every instance of it. If, for example, you see that you are having problems with fragments or run-ons, then make sure to look over the rest of your paper for other instances.

The Final Draft will be graded as an evaluative assignment. I will be using a rubric to assess its success as an essay, and I will not be commenting or highlighting on the essay directly as I would have on the previous two stages.

Formatting: This essay must be formatted in MLA. This means it needs a Heading on the Left Corner on the first page (DO NOT USE THE HEADING FEATURE of Word) that includes Your Name, My Name, The Course, and the Date. Do use the Heading/Page number feature to add your last name and page numbers to each page of the essay. It should also be double-spaced with 12-point Times New Roman Font.
