Exploratory EssayENG 1020, Spring 2020Format: MLA -By now, you should be able to demonstrate a mastery of MLA.Style: Since this essay is a record of your research, you will write it in first-person, using “I,” “my,” and other first-person personal pronouns.Overview: Using all of the selections you have read/viewed, choose a topic related to food that you will explore through research.Purpose: To narrate in first-person, chronological order, the progression of your thinking about an issue or problem related to the subject of food. To formulate a point of view that you will use for your final argument essay.Note: The best approach is to choose a topic in which you are genuinely interested, but do not know much about. The idea here is to learn and understand something new, not to reinforce what you already know. This essay will reflect your sense of learning, that is, how you learn about the issue or problem you choose. A formal exploratory essay differs from a simple informative essay because in the exploratory, you are narrating your process as you learn more things about your topic. Rather than state a thesis or claim, begin with a question or problem. For example, if you were going to explore the topic of pesticides, your research question might be, “What is the effect of pesticides on the fetus?” Describe your inquiry process as you work your way through sources or different views. Be sure to read the student essay that models this approach that you can find under Writing Assignments/Exploratory Essay/Sample essay. I can’t stress this enough.Follow these instructions:•Choose a food topic in which you are genuinely interested.•Send me the research question by Wednesday, April. 15.•Use the outline that you can find under Writing Assignments/Exploratory Essay.•Instead of a thesis statement, state your research question in the introductory paragraph.•Use first-person narration, to answer such questions as: What did you learn from each source? What related ideas does the source inspire you to explore? Is the source credible? Why/why not? •Give the title, author, and place of publication of each source you discuss.•Give a summary of your intellectual journey and the answer to the research question in the conclusion. •Use at least fivesources from the Tri-C Library databasesIn addition to these resources, other credible sources may be used for additional information•Be sure to keep track of your sources as you go, so that you have complete and accurate in-text citations and Works Cited page.
•The essay should be between1500-2000 words. You can find out how many words you have by looking in the lower righthand corner of Word.
