Exploring Design Functionality

For this assignment, you will demonstrate your understanding of human factors, universal design, and inclusive design.

You will be designing a workspace for your client using a collage of photos, drawings, and written text. You will be submitting your assignment in a slide presentation format. You will be evaluated on how you incorporate human factors including ergonomics, universal design, and inclusive design within the project.

Directions

1. Decide who your client will be.

You may choose someone living in your home, a classmate, or a friend. Identify the client.

2. Analyze the current workspace of your client.

Take photos. Annotate the photos. Take measurements. Create sketches using the measurements. Add an additional summary that outlines key issues. Analyze the furniture, natural and artificial lighting, acoustics, space planning (location), etc. At a minimum, make sure your summary addresses key issues in each of these areas – human factors, ergonomics and universal design. Your analysis should identify things that are working and areas in need of improvement.

3. Propose solutions for renovating the workspace.

Solution 1 – Identify solutions that would not cost any additional money.

Solution 2 – Using a budget of up to $1500, propose a solution that would be ideal.

For each solution, include images, annotated drawings/sketches with measurements, and a summary statement that describes the changes that would be made.Your summary should addresses key issues in each of these areas – human factors, ergonomics and universal design. Include measurements showing the current office setup. Include measurements in your solutions that show what the ideal setup should be for the client.
