Fashion in Art

My final paper is about fashion in art. The artwork I chose is Equestrienne from the AIC (https://www.artic.edu/artworks/35376/equestrienne). You can talk about the background of the artwork or similar artworks, the history of the Tang dynasty, and mainly focus on Tang costumes.

Here is the instruction:

Continue researching your chosen artwork.

Gain an understanding of
– the time the work was made
– the place the work was made and/or the subject was from
– social status of the artist and the subject
– clothing expectations, customs, and meanings of their time
– names of garment parts and fabrics
– how the fashion/garments/clothing contribute to a reading of the artwork and understanding of the subject or artists

Write a 800-1200 word paper analyzing and contextualizing the garments in the artwork. The paper should be organized with an introduction, a logical flow of information, and a conclusion. Include your interpretation of how we might view this work today.

In addition, the paper must include:
– 3-5 images (with identifying details) that support your writing
– a list of at least 5 references

And must be submitted as either a PDF or Microsoft Word Document

You can use these entries from the FIT Fashion History Timeline as examples of how to approach this analysis. (Note the Sargent piece was written by an Undergraduate and the Carracci piece was written by a Graduate student. I am expecting something more along the lines of the first as far as depth and length, but I want you to read the second as well to see how rich the analysis can be.)
